04 Who Is Responsible For Our Waste? with Sophie Walker, founder of Dsposal

Meet Sophie Walker [https://twitter.com/Sophie_COO], co-founder and COO of Dsposal [https://dsposal.uk/], a clean tech company helping businesses and individuals to dispose of their waste better. Waste crime costs the economy in England an estimated 1 billion pounds a year and it’s believed that 18% of all waste is illegally managed. Despite proper waste management being a legal responsibility, for some, the financial gain outweighs the likelihood of getting caught. This is not just a huge economic issue, but the impact on the environment of improper waste management is devastating. Sophie, alongside her business and life partner Tom, is on a mission to provide transparency in the waste management sector. It might not sound sexy, but it’s arguably the most critical piece of the sustainability puzzle - once we’ve bought less, reused and recycled as much as possible, disposing of our waste is the final step. I really enjoyed talking to Sophie for this episode, her energy and enthusiasm is just infectious. I hope you enjoy listening. 03 Fixing What's Broken with Ruby Pillai, Founder of iWarranty

Meet Dr Ruby Pillai [https://twitter.com/drrubypillai], founder of iWarranty [https://iwarranty.io/], the app that manages warranties for all your electronic items, and enables you to find and organise repairs when something breaks. Electronic waste is a huge global problem. As much as 50 million tonnes of e-waste is produced globally every year, weighing more than all the commercial airliners ever flown, and less than 20% of e-waste is recycled. Ruby’s journey to create iWarranty began when she was working as a finance lawyer. Ruby had a set of headphones that broke within the warranty period, but by the time she had processed the paperwork and contacted the manufacturer, the warranty had expired. As a lawyer familiar with paperwork and complex processes, Ruby knew that if she struggled, others would have even more difficulties. There was a real opportunity to streamline the claims process, access repairs and improve the life span of hard-to-recycle items. Ruby says: “Becoming an entrepreneur was a crazy move, I was really frightened by it, but the frustration became the fire in me to keep going.” You can join us on Twitter @greenreallymean [https://twitter.com/greenreallymean] and if you love listening to us, please rate review and subscribe wherever you're listening. 02 There Is So Much We Can Still Do with Tessa Khan, Founder of Uplift

Meet Tessa Khan [https://twitter.com/tessakhan]. Tessa is an international climate change and human rights lawyer, campaigner and strategist. She is the founder of Uplift [https://upliftuk.org/], a social organisation that supports and energises the movement for a fossil fuel-free UK. Before Uplift, Tessa set up the Climate Litigation Network, taking national governments to court over their insufficient climate policies. Tessa has also delivered a rallying TEDx Talk [https://www.ted.com/talks/tessa_khan_the_next_frontier_in_t], was named by TIME magazine as one of fifteen women leading the fight against climate change and is an awardee of the Climate Breakthrough Project [https://www.climatebreakthroughproject.org/awardee/tessa-khan/]. Hearing Tessa’s insights on the levers for change in the climate crisis is refreshing and mobilising - in the face of overwhelming climate anxiety and feeling like we have no power, Tessa lays out pathways for action. She reassures us that what we've learned from the pandemic is how to deal with crises under pressure, that we're vulnerable but we can mobilise fast. For all of us, knowing that we have agency matters in the face of huge odds - and the truth is there is so much that we can all do and we are at a moment in history when we still have time to shift things. I hope you love Tessa as much as I did! 01 You Can't Guilt People Into Making Change with Aisling Byrne, Founder of NUW

Welcome to the first-ever episode of What Does Green Really Mean?! This week, meet Aisling Byrne, founder of NUW [https://www.thenuwardrobe.com/], the clothes swapping app that makes fashion unlimited, sustainable and affordable. By swapping clothes on the app like you would with a friend, you have access to the wardrobe of the whole country. You can try new outfits as often as you like, without contributing to landfill and minimising your carbon footprint. Aisling’s journey to build Nuw began with a trip to India in 2013, shortly after the Rana Plaza disaster in Bangladesh, where 1132 people were killed in a building collapse that housed five garment factories. She saw the dark side of an industry that she loved, first hand, and has since worked to change it. I loved talking to Aisling for this episode, and I'm sure you will love her too. She says: “you can't guilt people into making change, you have to provide the solution”. I hope you enjoy listening!
