Muhammad Siddiq al-Minshawi, also widely known as Al-Minshawi, was an iconic and revered Egyptian Quranic reciter and Hafiz. Born on January 20, 1920, in El-Mansha, Sohag, Egypt, he came from a family deeply rooted in Quranic tradition; both his father, Siddiq Al-Minshawi, and his grandfather were renowned reciters. His brother, Mahmoud Al-Minshawi, also became a distinguished reciter. Al-Minshawi passed away on June 20, 1969, at the age of 49. He is widely regarded as one of the most important and famous reciters of modern times, often grouped with other legendary figures such as Abdul Basit Abdus Samad, Mustafa Ismail, and Mahmoud Khalil Al-Hussary, forming a quadrumvirate whose influence on the Islamic world’s Quranic recitation is immense. Nicknamed Al-Saut Al-Baki (The Weeping Voice), his recitations were known for their profound emotional depth, impeccable Tajweed (rules of recitation), and moving delivery, which deeply touched the hearts of listeners. He primarily recited in the Hafs ‘an Asim narration. Sheikh Muhammad Siddiq al-Minshawi’s early education in Quranic sciences was significantly influenced by his father. He committed the entire Quran to memory at the tender age of eight. He further honed his skills and studied the rules of recitation (Ilm al-Tajweed) under the guidance of esteemed teachers, notably Sheikh Ibrahim As-Su’oodi, at a young age. He was also considered a protégé of Muhammad Rifat and Muhammad Salamah, who were prominent reciters of the 20th century. His rigorous training and natural talent led him to achieve a lofty status as a Qari, holding the title Shaykh al-Maqâri. He traveled extensively to many countries, including Indonesia, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, Palestine (Al-Aqsa), Saudi Arabia, and Syria, spreading the message of the Quran through his recitations. The “Child Repeat” recordings of Muhammad Siddiq al-Minshawi are a special and highly valuable collection designed specifically for teaching the Holy Quran. In these recordings, Sheikh Al-Minshawi recites verses or short passages, and then a group of children or a single child repeats after him. This method, often referred to as “Mushaf Al-Mu’allim” (The Teacher’s Quran), is an exceptionally effective pedagogical tool. The purpose of these “Child Repeat” recitations is manifold: they help students, especially children and beginners, to accurately imitate the correct pronunciation (Makharij) and application of Tajweed rules as demonstrated by a master reciter. The repetitive nature of the format assists greatly in the memorization of the Quran, allowing learners to internalize the verses and their proper recitation. Additionally, the presence of children repeating the verses can make the learning process more engaging and less daunting for young students. These unique “Child Repeat” renditions highlight Sheikh Al-Minshawi’s dedication not only to performing the Quran but also to preserving and transmitting its correct recitation to future generations.
