14. My Codependency and Recovery

Joni gets pretty open about her struggle with codependency within the context of her previous marriage. Jessica Miller, LCSW from Thoughts on Thoughts joins us to give us a helpful clinical perspective. We discuss what codependence looks like in romantic relationships, parent-child relationships, and a relationship with God. We talk about what a boundary looks like and what might happen as we put them in place. Finally, we talk about being a whole, happy person regardless of the time and season of life we are in.

13. Dealing With Grief and Helping Kids Process Emotions

Cari Runia was 32 years old and a mom of four young kids when her husband, Ryan, died suddenly of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and sudden cardiac arrest. Cari unfolds her story of the day she found out Ryan died and the weight of telling her kids what happened to their dad. Throughout the episode you will hear how naturally introspective Cari is and her willingness to learn and dig in. She is naturally confident and has been a mentor and beacon to us just by being our friend and her willingness to be open with her experiences and emotions.

12. A Mixed Faith Marriage

Alyssa and Joseph both grew up members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Joseph had questions regarding the church as a young man, but he continued to be an active member of the church while searching for answers. He did all the "right" things. He read the scriptures and prayed to God. He served an LDS mission. He was married in the temple to Alyssa yet the questions remained. A couple of years into their marriage, he shared his feelings with Alyssa and began distancing himself from the LDS religion. They tell us of their resulting journey which includes entering into a new marriage, shifting expectations, and learning to navigate two different faiths within their home.

11. Victimhood in Motherhood, Marriage, and Religion

Paige Clark is a life coach whose mantra is “choose love over fear.” She talks about how she has played the victim in her life, and how she has shifted out of that role by identifying her “blind spots.” She shares with us a little of her journey including a divorce, and how she has been able to take control of and fall back in love with her life. She discusses her constant struggle with positive self-talk and her trick to fix the "biggest fat lie." Furthermore, she talks about how she has been able to gain faith in men again following her divorce.  Some books Paige recommends: 1. 10. Our Experience with a New Kind of Therapy, Shame, and Processing Trauma

No guest this week y'all! Just your two favorite hosts, Amy and Joni. We discuss our personal experiences with sand tray therapy (previously taught to us by our guest JaNae). We bring up the benefits of sand tray and what to expect if you decide to go. It's definitely not your normal therapy, but we both found it was the therapy we needed at this time. We also talk about shame and processing life at our own speed and not against anyone else's pace.
