We can tell a lot about our relationship with God, ourselves and others by reflecting on what we pray for. In many ways, what we hear from God and share with Him privately is amazing an amazing predictor of what our public life with Him will look like. This is especially true in times of conflict and crisis with those we love and care deeply about. And for many Christians engaged in the long, hard work of justice and reconciliation we spend much more time in prayer for people to change rather than God to change us so that we are able to love people where they are. And it is this radical embrace of the other that allows us to participate in the transformation that Jesus does in the hearts and lives of those who disagree, dismiss or do us harm; because we have allowed Him to do that transformational work in us.
