The gang discusses "The Great Idea" from Dostoyevsky's "Brothers Karamazov" and Robert Frost's "Mending Wall" and "Love and Question".

In our going Partners in Formation series, SHA staff, faculty, and parents discuss Dietrich Bonhoffer's Life Together.

Partners in Formation is a series of regularly hosted talks at Sacred Hear Academy, opportunities for parents and faculty to come together, discuss meaningful texts, and generally improve their chops when it comes to educating our children. You should consider attending one or five of them if you have the chance on a Thursday afternoon. You can find latest details on the Sacred Heart Academy Facebook feed. Of course, with coronavirus, however, everything has gone online. You can still attend PIF, but it has to be virtually for the time being. The silver lining is that recordings of these sessions can now be put down the podcast feed, so you can listen in while you’re on a jog, or making dinner… or while you’re sitting on your couch, pensively staring out the window... waiting for the end of the lockdown… In this session, Zach Good leads parents and faculty in a discussion of CS Lewis’ sermon “Learning in War-Time.”

At Sacred Heart Academy, we don’t buy the old adage that when it comes to Highlanders, there can be only one. At the Academy, we have not only one, but two Mr Hylands. Last episode, we heard from Joe Hyland, and today we’ll hear from Gannon Hyland. The two are not related except by way of the fact that they are, both of them, excellent gentlemen. (And by the way, if you get that silly Highlander joke, you win today's 1980s movie nerd prize.) This chat was recorded during the coronavirus shutdown, during a thunderstorm, across a janky Google Meet connection, so the audio is, as you can imagine, pristine. That said, you’ll find Gannon a man of excellent insight into the true goal of education and how that goal drives the ship in the classroom. Gannon was one of the first teachers hired when Sacred Heart was refunded a few years ago, so he’s seen a thing or two. You’ll enjoy what’s he’s got to say.

Today we’re talking with Joe Hyland. Joe is a licensed counselor, a coach, and he teaches government, history, theology, and PE at Sacred Heart Academy. In this chat, we talk about Joe’s background and education, how his background as a counselor has helped him with teaching and with coaching, and why sainthood is better than football championships. If you don’t know Joe, I think this will be a great introduction.
