In this episode, I’m chatting with Paula Buls, a psychotherapist and licensed clinical social worker in Austin, TX. She has extensive experience working with the LGBTQ community and was a founding member of the Transgender Education Network of Texas [http://www.transtexas.org/]. She’s also an out and proud trans woman. We talk about her childhood and transition, trans pride and visibility, and gender as a beautiful expression of who we are. Paula is really passionate about what she does and toward the end, we get into a great conversation about challenging the stereotypes that keep people in boxes. We also talk about Ellen (yes, that Ellen) and Laura Jane Grace from Against Me. For more about Paula, please visit her website at www.paulabuls.com [http://www.paulabuls.com]. One year ago, a shooter opened fire in a popular gay club in Orlando, killing 49 people and wounding 53 others, making it the deadliest mass shooting in US history. In this week’s episode, I’m talking with Adam Miller, a therapist volunteering at an LGBTQ center in Orlando at the time. Adam and I talk about the immediate aftermath of the shooting and the response of local therapists and The Center, the long term effects of the shooting on the LGBTQ community and community at large, and what’s happening now to honor and remember those affected by the shooting. There's a moment of silence for reflection and respect before the interview begins. Adam is currently between websites, to learn more, visit his Psychology Today profile [https://therapists.psychologytoday.com/rms/name/Adam_Miller_MA,LMHC_Orlando_Florida_128118]. This episode covers sensitive material. If you need support, please reach out to someone like a therapist, trusted friend, or the LGBT Hotline at 888-843-4564.
In this episode, I'm chatting with Kameron Winters, a trans man and coordinator of LGBTQ & Diversity Programs at American University. In this position, he oversees general LGBTQ outreach and education initiatives and also works with other staff on initiatives and diversity workshops to support and advocate for better inclusion of women, students of color, LGBTQ students, and first-generation college students. He also happens to be a personal friend! Listen in as we discuss growing up in the south (spoiler: we went to the same high school), not feeling trans enough, and sexuality versus gender identity.
