Acerca de Airbrushed

Produced by Hot Press, this six-part series will focus on half-a-dozen revolutionary female figures from Ireland, going back to the era during which Irish independence was established and the new State took shape: Dr Kathleen Lynn, Eva Gore-Booth, Helena Moloney, Margaret Skinnider, Helen Chevenix and Elizabeth O'Farrell. Fronted by Niamh Browne and Alana Daly-Mulligan, Airbrushed: Irish Revolutionary Queer Women is designed to give listeners an insight into the private lives of some of the formidable women who shaped the country – including Chief Medical Officer of the Irish Republican Army, Dr. Kathleen Lynn; schoolteacher turned sniper Margaret Skinnider; President of the Irish Trades Union Congress, Helena Mary Molony; and the woman who negotiated the the conditions of surrender in 1916, Elizabeth O'Farrell. There will also be episodes exploring the less militant, but no less important social justice champions from that tumultuous time, Helen Chevenix and Eva Gore-Booth. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 6: Margaret Skinnider

"School-teacher turned sniper!" Join hosts Alana Daly Mulligan and Niamh Browne, along with Dr. Mary McAuliffe, as they explore the remarkable life of Margaret Skinnider, the youngest of the Irish revolutionary women they’ve discussed. A proud member of Cumann na mBan, Margaret was the only female combatant wounded in action, having been shot three times on April 27th while attempting to set fire to buildings on Harcourt Street to block the retreat of British soldiers who had positioned a machine gun on the roof of the University Church. Known for empowering women through gun skills, she also tested dynamite alongside fellow revolutionary Madeleine ffrench-Mullen. Margaret was queer and shared a partnership with Nora Connolly, making a significant impact in the fight for Irish independence 🌈✨. This episode features recordings from Harcourt Street, highlighting her incredible journey! ---------------------------------------- Hosted on Acast. Episode 2: Eva Gore Booth

"Queer theory before queer theory was invented." Join hosts Alana Daly Mulligan and Niamh Browne as they delve into the life of the well-respected writer and poet Eva Gore-Booth with Dr. Mary McAuliffe. A passionate pacifist, Eva was deeply involved in Irish nationalism, women’s rights, trade union equality, and animal rights. We explore her romantic partnership with fellow activist Ester Roper, who together, created a home that became a centre for the republican movement in the UK. They also bravely engaged with controversial topics of their time, including same-sex relationships and transgenderism 🌈✨. This episode features recordings from Kilmainham Jail, where Eva's sister, Countess Constance Markievicz, was held during the 1916 Rising, and where Eva and Ester campaigned together for her freedom. Our hosts also read and reflect on Yeats' poem "In Memory of Eva Gore-Booth and Con Markievicz." Celebrate their profound impact on social justice.
