63 - Britt Evans, Ploughman Cider | Hauling apples, building connections, proving she belongs. Nerding out over fermentation.

Britt Evans always has her hands in the dirt. She has a constant curiosity that was born in the streets of Philadelphia. For Britt, life means everything; nothing happens without a reason. This is why she has spent her life following the bread crumbs. This practice pulled her from Hawthorn’s to Monk’s to Love City to Ploughman. Even though she’s on the inside she has always had to prove she belongs. She’s proven it over and over again, connecting and nerding out with those around her. Did I mention she is creating some of the best cider out there, so good that it’s showing up on the tap list at the legendary Monk’s Cafe in Philly? She’s walking the walk and talking the talk as she becomes one of the most accomplished cider makers around. 62 - Luis Matte, Messorem | From fan to factor, traveling the world, expanding community, spreading the good word on the freshest and best from Montreal.

Picture the graphic on the front of a can of Heady Topper, the famous white whale beer from The Alchemist. The drinker takes a sip from a glass and his head explodes with hops. Luis Matte was, and still is, that man. Luis was a wine drinker, his interest likely stemming from his father who dragged the family to wineries and vineyards on family vacations. In Luis’s adult life, however, all of that changed. It started with a Sam Adams Summer Ale, and in his pursuit of more of this beer, he was offered a Heady Topper. Luis couldn’t believe the flavor, he couldn’t believe a beer could taste that way. Luis’s excitement from that beer spread into a career of providing similar beer awakenings for the lucky patrons of Messorem or fans around the world lucky enough to attend one of their many tap takeovers. Luis is out there preaching the gospel of this hype brewery from Montreal. He does it with a gentle kindness and awareness that isn’t often found in the industry. He makes himself available to talk, available to have a beer with. He is building community one conversation at a time. He is still amazed that this is his life, but anyone who spends five minutes with him knows that he found his true calling. 61 - Erika + Cheyne Tessier, Origin Beer Project | Like-minded creators building community one small step at a time. Learning from their elders and a hands on approach. Discovering their found family.

Erika and Cheyne, founders of Origin Beer Project, fit together like puzzle pieces. He was raised by his single mother and a tribe of strong women. She was raised by her father surrounded by four brothers. He was a born builder, tinkering with legos and other blocks from a young age. She learned to be assertive and loud, helping her survive in a male-dominated industry. They both have always valued the process of creating from scratch, a trait passed down from hard-working grandparents. While they both had a strong family foundation, they have taken to their second family, and more broadly, their community of Providence, Rhode Island. Origin Beer Project is a byproduct of that communal support. They are builders. They value the process of creating from scratch. They are puzzle pieces, completing each other with complimentary upbringings. Origin is an amalgamation of it all. When you work in public health and a global pandemic hits, it truly puts things into perspective. It can also provide clarity. LaTreace Harris finally understood the value and importance of having another meaningful thing in your life other than what helps you pay the bills. Out of this clarity came The Beery Godmother. Certified cicerone? Check. Certified BJCP Judge? Check. Beer Education Consultant? Check. Simply put: she does it all. What started as a little dip into the beer shallow end (drinking a Blue Moon while watching football with friends) has become a huge life change for LaTreace. She hasn’t cut corners either. She’s brought the same work ethic to beer as she established in her career in public health. She’s always been curious as to how things work, as to where things come from.
