The Path to Authenticity: Mastering Technique While Staying True to Self

The salient theme of this episode revolves around the transformative journey of artistic expression and the profound impact of rejection within the creative process. I am joined by Justice Gardner, a talented performer who shares insights from his inaugural podcast experience, emphasizing the significance of resilience in the face of adversity, particularly during the audition process. Throughout our discourse, we explore the delicate balance between technique and personal identity, shedding light on how artists can maintain their authenticity amidst external pressures and expectations. Justice articulates the necessity of continual self-education and the importance of community in fostering artistic growth. This episode serves as a poignant reminder that the path of creativity is fraught with challenges, yet it is through these very struggles that we cultivate our unique voices and perspectives in the world of art. Takeaways: 1. The journey of artistic expression is often laden with challenges, including rejection, yet it is essential to embrace these experiences to foster personal growth. 2. Maintaining a balance between technique and joy is crucial in the arts; true freedom in artistic expression emerges when one is proficient in their craft. 3. The importance of networking cannot be overstated; engaging with individuals across different experiences and skill levels enriches one's artistic journey. 4. As artists, we must understand that our value is not solely determined by external validation but by the genuine expression of our unique voices and perspectives. 5. Embracing criticism and learning from others is vital; it is through continuous education and practice that we evolve and refine our artistic identities. 6. Art serves as a reflection of one's journey and experiences, allowing for a deeper connection with both oneself and the audience.

From Small Town to 30,000 Students: Evan’s Honest Mental Health Journey

What happens when you go from being “the kid everyone knows” to feeling completely invisible? In this Student Showcase episode of Campus Chronicles, Brooke Young sits down with Evan St. Louis, a junior at the University of Connecticut studying Molecular and Cell Biology, to talk openly about mental health, identity, and the quiet pressure many students carry. Evan shares what it was like transitioning from a small, tight knit town to a massive university campus. He opens up about anxiety, depression, nearly failing out during his sophomore year, and how avoidance almost cost him his education. He also speaks honestly about men’s mental health stigma, asking for help, healing his relationship with food after binge eating, and why sports have remained an emotional outlet throughout his life. This episode is raw, reflective, and deeply relatable, especially if you have ever felt overwhelmed, lost, or like you were supposed to be doing better than you are. In this episode, you’ll hear: • The shock of moving from a small town to a huge university • What high-functioning anxiety can look like in students • Why men often struggle to ask for help • Nearly failing out and the wake-up call that followed • Healing a relationship with food and stress • Why sports became a lifeline • How support and treatment changed everything • Three honest pieces of advice for university students

How to Say No Without Feeling Guilty

When was the last time you said yes and immediately regretted it? In this solo episode of Campus Chronicles, Brooke talks honestly about why so many students struggle to say no, and how constantly saying yes leads straight to burnout, resentment, and exhaustion. From wanting to be liked, to not disappointing friends, professors, teammates, or partners, the pressure to be available all the time is real in university. Brooke shares her own experience with people pleasing, over apologising, and feeling guilty for setting boundaries, and explains why saying no is not rude or selfish. It is self respect. This episode is a reminder that every yes costs something. Your time, your energy, your focus, and your peace. And when you say yes to everything, you are quietly saying no to yourself. In this episode, Brooke covers: • Why most of us were never taught how to say no • How college culture rewards overcommitment • The hidden cost of always being available • Why guilt after saying no does not mean you were wrong • How your nervous system reacts to new boundaries • Simple, kind ways to say no without over explaining • Why over apologising weakens boundaries • How saying no protects your energy before burnout hits • Why choosing yourself is not rejecting others If you are tired, stretched thin, or constantly doing things you do not want to do, this episode will help you rethink what saying no actually means.

You’re Doing Enough: A Student Conversation on Burnout and Balance

What happens when you do everything right and it still does not go the way you planned? In this Student Showcase episode of Campus Chronicles, Brooke sits down with Madison Crook, a third-year university student and digital marketing creative, to talk honestly about burnout, anxiety, perfectionism, and learning how to let go of impossible standards. Madison shares a defining campus moment when she organised an event she was deeply proud of, only for very few people to attend. What followed was disappointment, tears, and a powerful realisation that success is not always measured by numbers. Throughout the episode, Madison opens up about living as an overachiever, working in social media while still at uni, people pleasing in professional spaces, and learning to recognise when stress is taking over. She also shares how she has started separating outcomes from identity and giving herself permission to slow down. This episode is for students who feel tired, overwhelmed, or like they should be further ahead than they are. In this episode, you’ll hear: • What it feels like when hard work does not get the result you expected • How perfectionism quietly fuels burnout • Why outcomes are not the same as self-worth • How anxiety shows up in everyday student life • People pleasing in internships and work environments • The pressure of building a career while still studying • Why social media creates unrealistic expectations • What self-care looks like without pressure or aesthetics • How to stop adding more and start subtracting • Three honest pieces of advice Madison gives to students This conversation is a reminder that you are not behind, you are not broken, and you are doing enough.

Ask the Questions. It Will Change Everything.

What if one skill could change your education, your career path, and your confidence? In this deeply personal episode of Campus Chronicles, Brooke sits down with her sister Bailey Young, a licensed social worker, recent Master of Social Work graduate, and Child Play Therapist, to talk about resilience, education, and the power of asking meaningful questions. Bailey’s academic journey was anything but typical. During her undergraduate studies, she became bedridden after suffering multiple disc herniations at just 19 years old. With chronic pain, delayed diagnosis, and months of attending university online, she was forced to reimagine what learning looked like. Instead of giving up, Bailey fought for her education and graduated with a 4.0 GPA, eventually earning her Master’s degree. Because much of her college experience happened remotely, Bailey built deep, transformative relationships with her professors. Those relationships shaped not only her education but her desire to one day become a professor herself. Throughout the conversation, she shares how curiosity, preparation, and asking thoughtful questions became her greatest strength. This episode is honest, reflective, and filled with practical wisdom for students navigating uncertainty, internships, interviews, health challenges, or self doubt. In this episode, you’ll learn: • How Bailey continued her education while bedridden • Why strong professor relationships changed her academic path • How asking questions builds confidence and connection • What makes a truly great question • Why interviews are a two way conversation • How to prepare questions that reveal culture and values • Why discomfort is part of real growth • How to stop selling yourself short • Why confidence is built through action, not perfection • Three pieces of advice Bailey gives to university students This episode is a reminder that education is not about perfection. It is about persistence, curiosity, and believing you belong in the room. About Bailey: Bailey Young is a licensed social worker and Child Play Therapist, and a recent Master of Social Work graduate from Campbellsville University. She is a small business owner, book reviewer, and Fundraising Coordinator for Ashland Special Needs Ministry, supporting their annual Night to Shine event. Bailey also volunteers with organisations supporting the special needs community and provides companionship to older adults in nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
