Acerca de Divergently Psyched!

Welcome to Divergently Psyched! I’m Dr. Katie Stahler, a psychologist based in Pittsburgh who believes mental wellness isn’t one-size-fits-all. This podcast is all about exploring different ways we can care for our minds and our lives — from setting boundaries and calming our nervous systems to rediscovering joy, building connection, and actually enjoying rest. Even though I am a psychologist, this isn’t therapy. Instead, think of it as a mix of ideas, tools, and conversations you can take into your everyday life. My hope is that you’ll leave each episode feeling encouraged, supported, and a little more grounded. Whatever you’re searching for in life — or simply doing in this moment — tune in and let’s explore what mental wellness can look like when it truly fits you. Your path. Your brain. You’re psyched.

Calm for the Holidays: Closing the Year Gently

As the year winds down, many people feel pressure to reflect, reset, and “finish strong.” But our nervous systems don’t close the year with productivity — they close it with gentleness, completion, and rest. In this final episode of Calm for the Holidays, Dr. Katie Stahler invites you into a slower, kinder way of ending the year. Together, we’ll explore why this season can feel so emotionally heavy, how to honor what this year has asked of you, and how to create a sense of completion without forcing closure. We’ll talk about: ✨ Why the end of the year stirs up big feelings ✨ The difference between closure and completion ✨ Gentle reflection that isn’t a performance review of your life ✨ What it means to set down what you’re tired of carrying ✨ How rest becomes the bridge between years This is a soft landing — a chance to exhale, acknowledge your effort, and move forward with compassion rather than pressure. You are allowed to end the year gently.

Calm for the Holidays: Rest, Joy, & Saying No to Burnout

The holiday season often asks for more than our nervous systems can give. In this episode, Dr. Katie Stahler explores how rest and joy aren’t indulgences — they’re essential forms of nervous-system repair. We’ll talk about: ✨ Why rest is biologically necessary for recovery ✨ How play, laughter, and small moments of joy regulate stress ✨ Redefining joy so it doesn’t feel performative or draining ✨ Creating realistic energy budgets for socializing and giving ✨ Saying no with compassion before burnout takes over This episode is an invitation to slow down, protect your capacity, and let joy be quiet, simple, and sustaining. Because the holidays don’t need a more productive version of you — they need a rested one.

Calm for the Holidays: Navigating Grief & Loneliness During the Holidays

The holiday season can make grief feel sharper and loneliness feel heavier — even when you’re surrounded by celebration. In this gentle, grounding episode, Dr. Katie Stahler explores what it means to hold space for loss, longing, and mixed emotions during a time that often expects joy. We’ll talk about: ✨ Why grief intensifies during the holidays ✨ The nervous system’s response to loss and emotional overwhelm ✨ How to honor the people or chapters you’re missing ✨ Simple rituals of remembrance and quiet connection ✨ What to say (and not say) when supporting someone grieving ✨ Ways to care for yourself through emotional waves This episode is a reminder that your grief is not a burden — it’s evidence of love. You don’t have to force cheer or hide your sadness. You’re allowed to feel however you feel this season. Missing someone means they mattered.

Calm for the Holidays: Boundaries, Guilt & Family Dynamics

The holidays tend to bring out old roles, unspoken expectations, and pressure to keep everyone happy — even at the expense of your own wellbeing. In this episode, Dr. Katie Stahler explores why boundaries feel harder this time of year and how to hold them with clarity, compassion, and nervous-system awareness. We’ll cover: ✨ Why holiday guilt doesn’t mean your boundary is wrong — just new ✨ How childhood roles resurface in adult dynamics ✨ Scripts for saying no to events, traditions, and uncomfortable conversations ✨ How to protect your energy when others push back ✨ Grounding techniques to support you before and after family gatherings This is your reminder that you’re not responsible for managing everyone’s emotions. Your needs matter too and you’re allowed to create a holiday season that doesn’t drain you.

Calm for the Holidays: The Pressure to Be Merry

The holidays are often portrayed as joyful, magical, and full of connection — but real life is far more complicated. In this episode, Dr. Katie Stahler unpacks the emotional pressure to “be merry,” even when your body and mind are telling a different story. We’ll talk about: ✨ How toxic positivity shows up during the holidays ✨ Why forced joy exhausts the nervous system ✨ The importance of emotional honesty (even in small ways) ✨ Permission to hold mixed emotions — grief, gratitude, joy, frustration ✨ Nervous system signs you’re masking distress ✨ Simple practices to return to yourself when the season feels heavy This episode is a gentle reminder that you don’t have to perform joy to deserve belonging. You’re allowed to show up as you are — complicated emotions and all. Because you don’t have to be merry to be meaningful.
