Episode 40: Retirement, What's next?

Retirement is something every firefighter talks about, but not many people are truly ready for when the time comes. In this episode of From the Cab, we have a real conversation about what happens when the career that helped define your life finally comes to an end. We talk about the transition out of the fire service, the mental and emotional toll that can come with it, and the struggle many firefighters face trying to rediscover purpose outside of the firehouse. From losing the routine and camaraderie to figuring out what the next chapter looks like, retirement can be one of the hardest adjustments a firefighter will ever make. This episode is about more than just walking away from the job. It’s about identity, legacy, purpose, and preparing yourself for life after the tones drop for the last time. Whether retirement is years away or right around the corner, this is a conversation every firefighter needs to hear.

Episode 39: Mental Health- Get comfortable being uncomfortable

In this episode, we tackle one of the most important and often overlooked topics in the fire service: mental health. Firefighters are trained to run toward chaos, tragedy, and trauma while the rest of the world runs away. But what happens after the call is over? What happens when the weight of those experiences begins to follow us home? We explore the realities of stress, cumulative trauma, PTSD, depression, and substance abuse within the fire service and discuss why these challenges affect so many first responders. More importantly, we talk about the culture that has historically discouraged firefighters from speaking openly about what they’re going through, and why that culture must change. This conversation focuses on breaking the stigma, recognizing the warning signs in ourselves and our brothers and sisters, and creating an environment where asking for help is seen as a sign of strength, not weakness. Taking care of others is what we do. It is time we make taking care of each other part of what we do as well. It is time we break the stigma revolving around mental health and being weak. If you or someone you know is struggling with their mental health, please reach out and get help. If you are thinking of hurting yourself, please call 988 and speak with a Crisis Intervention Team Officer. We are all in this together. No one fights alone. https://www.ncdhhs.gov/divisions/mental-health-developmental-disabilities-and-substance-use-services/crisis-services/988-lifeline

Episode 38: Conspiracy Theories part 3

On November 22, 1963, the world stopped when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. Within hours, authorities identified Lee Harvey Oswald as the lone gunman responsible for the killing. But more than sixty years later, questions still linger, and for many, the official explanation simply doesn’t add up. In this episode, we dive deep into one of the most debated events in American history: the assassination of JFK and the conspiracy theories that have surrounded it ever since. Was Oswald truly acting alone, or was he part of something far larger? We explore the findings of the Warren Commission, the controversy surrounding the “magic bullet” theory, and the mysterious circumstances surrounding Oswald himself, including his time in the Soviet Union and his own assassination just two days after Kennedy’s death. We’ll also discuss the House Select Committee on Assassinations, which concluded in 1979 that Kennedy was “probably assassinated as the result of a conspiracy.” From disputed eyewitness accounts and missing evidence to recently declassified government files, the Kennedy assassination remains a puzzle that continues to fascinate historians, investigators, and conspiracy theorists alike. Was it the act of a lone gunman… or one of the most carefully concealed conspiracies in American history? Join us as we revisit Dealey Plaza and attempt to separate fact from speculation in the enduring mystery of the Kennedy assassination. Listen, like, follow us, and leave us a comment.

Episode 37: Conspiracy Theories part 2

In this episode, we dive into one of history’s most infamous disasters—the sinking of the RMS Titanic, and the conspiracy theories that have surrounded it for more than a century. From claims that the ship was deliberately sunk for insurance fraud, to the theory that it was actually the Titanic’s sister ship, Olympic, switched in a grand financial scheme… we unpack it all. We examine the powerful figures often pulled into these narratives, like J.P. Morgan, and explore why moments of tragedy tend to generate suspicion, speculation, and alternative explanations. Were warnings ignored on purpose? Was there a deeper financial or political motive? Or are these theories born from grief, mistrust, and the human need to make sense of catastrophe? More importantly, we break down what the historical evidence actually says. Using official inquiries, survivor testimony, and modern forensic analysis of the wreck, we separate documented fact from dramatic fiction. This episode isn’t just about Titanic, it’s about how conspiracy theories form, why they endure, and what they reveal about society’s relationship with power, tragedy, and truth. Some stories refuse to sink. Let’s explore why.
