Oh Good Heavens!

“If as a child you have not known a secure home, it is very likely as you go through life regardless of your abode or wherever you are, you will not feel at home. But on the other hand, if as a child you have been secure and at home, wherever you go will be home.”Paul turnier John 14:1-2 “Creatures are not born with desires unless satisfaction for those desires exists. A baby feels hunger: well, there is such a thing as food. A duckling wants to swim: well, there is such a thing as water. Men feel sexual desire: well, there is such a thing as sex. If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world. If none of my earthly pleasures satisfy it, that does not prove that the universe is a fraud. Probably earthly pleasures were never meant to satisfy it, but only to arouse it, to suggest the real thing.”C.S. Lewis Philippians 3:20-21 The letter and spirit of scripture, and of all Christianity, forbid us to suppose that life in the New Creation (Heaven) will be a sexual life; and this reduces our imagination to the withering alternatives either of bodies which are hardly recognizable as human bodies at all or else of a perpetual fast. As regards to the fast, I think our present outlook might be like that of a small boy who, on being told that the sexual act was the highest bodily pleasure, should immediately ask whether you ate chocolates at the same time. On receiving the answer ‘No,’ he might regard [the] absence of chocolates as the chief characteristic of sexuality. In vain would you tell him that the reason why lovers in their raptures don’t bother about chocolates is that they have something better to think of. The boy knows chocolate: he does not know the positive thing that excludes it. We are in the same position. We know the sexual life; we do not know, except in glimpses, the other thing which, in Heaven, will leave no room for it.”C.s. Lewis John 14:3 “A continual looking forward to the eternal world is not (as some modern people think) a form of escapism or wishful thinking, but one of the things a Christian is meant to do. It does not mean that we are to leave the present world as it is. If you read history you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world were just those who thought most of the next. The Apostles themselves, who set on foot the conversion of the Roman Empire, the great men who built up the Middle Ages, the English Evangelicals who abolished the Slave Trade, all left their mark on Earth, precisely because their minds were occupied with Heaven. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this. Aim at Heaven and you will get earth “thrown in:” aim at earth and you will get neither” C.s. lewis John 14:4-5

Restlessness

Sunday Liturgy for March 22, 2020Download GPKids Sermon NotesDownload HurriedHaulted Matthew 11:28-30: Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Matthew 11:28: Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Matthew 23:3c-5a: For they preach, but do not practice. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger. They do all their deeds to be seen by others. Matthew 11:28: Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Matthew 11:29: Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  John 6:29: Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” Proverbs 3:5-6: Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. John 15:5: I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. Matthew 11:29: Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  Matthew 11:30: For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. “You have made us for yourself, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” – Augustine 1 John 4:19: We love because he first loved us “Whatever your heart clings to and confides in, that is really your god.” – Martin Luther “A body by its weight tends to move towards its proper place. The weight’s movement is not necessarily downwards, but to its appropriate position: fire tends to move upward, a stone downward. They are acted on by their respective weights; they seek their own place. Oil poured under water is drawn up to the surface on top of the water. Water poured on top of oil sinks below the oil. They are acted on by their respective densities, they seek their own place. Things which are not in their intended position are restless. Once they are in their ordered position, they are at rest.”  Augustine Come to Jesus Take His Yoke

Songs are listed in the liturgy above. Sermon Notes/Screens Below are the notes/screens you would normally see during the sermon. 1 Timothy 6:6 If I like it, it’s mine.If I can take it away from you, it’s mine. If I had it a while ago, it’s mine. If I say it is mine, it’s mine. If it looks like mine, it’s mine. If I say I saw it first, it’s mine. If you are having fun with it, it’s mine. If you lay down your toy, it’s mine. If it is broken, it’s yours. It was Spring, but it was Summer I wanted: The warm days and the great outdoors. It was Summer, but it was Fall I wanted: The colorful leaves and the cool, dry air. It was Fall, but it was Winter I wanted: The beautiful snow and the joy of the holiday season. It was Winter, but it was Spring I wanted: The warmth and the blossoming of nature. I was a child, and it was adulthood I wanted: The freedom and the respect. I was 20, but it was 30 I wanted: To be mature and sophisticated. I was middle-aged, but it was 20 I wanted: The youth and the free spirit. I was retired, but it was middle-aged I wanted: The presence of mind without limitations. My life was over, and I never got what I wanted.Charles Swindoll 1 – You Can’t Take It With You. 1 Timothy 6:7 2 – You Already Have Enough. 1 Timothy 6:8 Matthew 6:25 “Possessions are only the traveling luggage of time; they are not the stuff of eternity. It would be sensible therefore to travel light.” John Stott “It is foolishness and a public madness to fill the cupboards with clothing and allow men who are created in God’s image and our likeness to stand naked. We who are disciples of Christ claim that our purpose on earth is to lay up treasures in heaven. But our actions often belie our words. Many Christians build for themselves fine houses, lay out splendid gardens, construct bathhouses, and buy fields. It is small wonder, then , that many pagans refuse to believe what we say . ‘If their eyes are set on mansions in heaven,’ they ask, ‘why are they building mansions on earth? If they put their words into practice, they would give their riches and live in simple huts.’ So these pagans conclude that we do not sincerely believe in the religion we profess; and as a result they refuse to take this religion seriously. You may say that the words of Christ on these matters are too hard for you to follow; and that while your spirit is willing, your flesh is weak. My answer is that the judgment of pagans about you is more accurate than your judgment of yourself. When the pagans accuse us of hypocrisy, many of us should plead guilty.”John Chrysostom 3 – You Can Destroy Your Life. 1 Timothy 6:9-10 Where’s my hope? 1 Timothy 6:17Proverbs 23:4-5 Do I just consumer or do I contribute? 1 Timothy 6:18 “In God’s city (heaven), the inhabitants love people and walk on gold, while in man’s city, the inhabitants love gold and walk on people.”unknown Who’s kingdom am I living for? 1 Timothy 6:19Colossians 3:4 “Because here’s something else that’s weird but true: in the day-to day trenches of adult life, there is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And the compelling reason for maybe choosing some sort of god or spiritual-type thing to worship…is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive. If you worship money and things, if they are where you tap real meaning in life, then you will never have enough, never feel you have enough. It’s the truth. Worship your body and beauty and sexual allure and you will always feel ugly. And when time and age start showing, you will die a million deaths before they finally grieve you. On one level, we all know this stuff
