Ep.118 Ryan Bennett Explains How To Get Good At Archery, And Much More!

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2321631/fan_mail/new] A perfect round sounds impressive until you learn what “perfect” actually means in tournament archery. We’re joined by Ryan  Bennett, a young Elite-sponsored shooter who’s already stacking wins, plus Lane Lewis and Darren Matthews to keep the conversation honest, funny, and grounded in real hunting life.  We get into how Ryan started with zero archery background, what changed when he finally got a proper bow tune, and why 3D tournaments feel like golf with adrenaline. Ryan breaks down competitive archery in plain language: indoor target scoring, outdoor variables, hunter class limitations, K50 rules, rangefinders, stabilizers, lenses, and why the top level becomes a brutal game of “you cannot miss.” We also talk big stages like the Las Vegas Shoot and the Lancaster Archery Classic, including what makes each event different for pressure, format, and nerves.  Ken also shares a tough personal story from black bear hunting: a shot that looked right, heavy blood, and still no recovery. That leads into a serious talk about ethical shots, realistic bowhunting distances, string jumping, and why tournament reps can sharpen decision-making when a real animal steps in. Ryan adds stories from traveling to France to shoot and explore hunting culture, plus the strange reality of Vegas off the shooting line.  If you care about bowhunting, competitive archery, 3D archery, target archery training, and the mindset that holds up under pressure, this one’s for you. Ep.117 Three Turkeys In Three Countries, One Spring

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2321631/fan_mail/new] Three turkeys in one spring sounds like bragging rights until you hear what it actually takes. I’m Ken Marr, and I sit down with Ontario turkey hunter and caller Adrian Hare to unpack a wild run that spans three countries and three very different birds: an Osceola in South Florida, a Gould’s turkey in Durango, Mexico, and an Eastern turkey back home in Ontario. If you love spring turkey hunting, this one is packed with the kind of details you only get from someone who has chased gobblers for decades and still pays attention to what the woods are telling him.  We start with Adrian’s background on the Quaker Boy pro staff and what competition calling taught him about diaphragm calls, reed counts, and why certain cuts create the rasp and realism hunters chase. Then we dig into tactics that travel: how to hunt quieter Osceola turkeys without overcalling, why a patient sit can beat running and gunning, and how he approaches morning birds versus afternoon birds. We also get into shotgun decisions like using a 410 with TSS, pattern confidence, and how regulations and shot size choices affect performance.  Mexico shifts the strategy again. Adrian explains why dry country makes water holes the center of the game for Gould’s turkeys, how fast these birds move, and what rocky hills and valleys mean for setups and calling. Finally, we come back to Ontario for a blunt look at turkey population drops after deep snow winters, why fewer hens changes everything, and what hunters can watch for as hatch rates and spring weather shape the future.  If you enjoyed this conversation, subscribe so you don’t miss the next one, share it with a turkey buddy, and leave a quick review so more hunters can find the show. Ep.116 Jet Boat Bear Camp

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2321631/fan_mail/new] A two-hour jet boat ride, an island camp lit up in the middle of nowhere, and black bears showing up like they own the place. That’s the kind of hunting story that sounds exaggerated until you hear how it’s built.  We sit down with Jason from Extreme Outdoor Guides and Outfitters, a 37-year veteran Canadian hunting guide who starts as a teenage camp helper and works his way through just about every big game hunt Canada can throw at a person. We talk honestly about the sacrifices of guiding, how he keeps anxious clients steady, and what he learns by “reading” hunters before they ever arrive. If you’ve ever wondered what separates a good outfitter from a great one, Jason explains it in plain language: access, pressure, preparation, and decisions under stress.  Then we get into the nuts and bolts of a remote northern Alberta black bear hunt near Fort McMurray, where jet boats replace quads and even planes can’t compete. Jason breaks down spring bear baiting strategy along river systems, how wind follows the curves of the river, and why setting hunters tight to the bank can keep scent flowing away from the bait. We also talk rifles and bows, why shot placement beats bringing the biggest cannon in your safe, and what broadhead choices help on animals that can “plug up” blood trails fast. And yes, there’s a bear camp story that starts with a text that only says “help.”  If you’re planning a guided black bear hunt, a moose hunt, or you just love real backcountry hunting talk, you’ll get practical tactics and hard-earned perspective here. Subscribe so you don’t miss future conversations, share this with a hunting buddy, and leave a review with the one gear choice you refuse to hunt without. Ep.115 Trivia Night Challenge 8, Turkey Edition! Test Your Skills

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2321631/fan_mail/new] Nobody walks into turkey season knowing everything, so we decided to make learning fun and a little competitive. We run a full round of wild turkey trivia with Dalton, Jesse, Curtis, and Ryan, and the best part is hearing the thought process when the answers are not obvious. If you like hunting stories, camp banter, and learning without getting lectured, you can play along and see how your turkey knowledge stacks up. We hit the core wild turkey facts that actually stick: what counts as a major predator, where turkeys roost, and why nesting on the ground changes everything. Then we get into the turkey slam rabbit hole with North American wild turkey subspecies like Eastern, Osceola, Rio Grande, Merriam’s, and Gould’s, plus the kind of details that make you stop and say, “Wait, really?” like which subspecies runs tallest and which one grows the longest spurs. The episode also goes deep on turkey senses and body language, including turkey eyesight, color vision, and the surprise that turkeys can detect UV light, which can make clean laundry a lot louder than you think. We talk “nature’s mood ring” head colors, the snood, and other weird anatomy that turns into real field awareness once you know what you’re looking at. We finish on a final curveball question, a one point win, and plenty of laughs along the way. If you enjoyed the game, subscribe so you don’t miss the next trivia battle, share it with a hunting buddy who swears they “know turkeys,” and leave a review to help more hunters find the show. What question would you ask in a round of turkey trivia? Check us out on Facebook  Hunts On Outfitting, or myself Ken Marr. Portada del episodio Ep.114 The Bear Queen

Ep.114 The Bear Queen

Send us Fan Mail [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2321631/fan_mail/new] A shotgun shows up in Tina’s arms the day before her son’s wedding and it quietly reroutes the rest of her life. What starts as a “fine, I’ll try it” moment turns into a full-on bear hunting obsession, complete with solo trips, long sits, hard travel weeks, and a goal that’s about experience more than a scoreboard: 50 bear hunts by age 70. We talk through what draws her to black bear hunting in the first place, including the adrenaline of pursuing an animal with real presence and real personality. Tina shares what she sees at bait sites, how bears act when they know you’re there, and why patience usually beats panic. Along the way we relive the close-up moments that stick with you: a big bear looking up into the stand, aggressive encounters on the ground, and the calm decision-making that keeps a hunt ethical and safe. Last season alone takes us across Alberta, Ontario, New Brunswick, and New Mexico. You’ll hear what makes Alberta feel almost unreal with bear numbers, how an Ontario chocolate bear finally shows after days of waiting, and why New Brunswick can produce giants when you refuse to rush. We also get practical about judging boar vs sow, the reality of hounds hunts with dogs in tight, and gear choices like 45-70 and 450 Bushmaster. If you’re searching for spring bear season tips, trophy black bear stories, or honest talk about baiting and hounds, this one delivers. If you enjoyed the stories and field lessons, subscribe, share this with a hunting buddy, and leave us a review with your biggest bear hunting question.
