Becoming an Attending: Podcast Panel with Dr. Jasmine Ebott, Dr. Collin Sitler and Dr. Aparna Kailasam

Hello! Welcome to this super fun episode with 3 amazing guests! Today we are chatting with 3 new Gyn Onc Attendings about what it is like to be a NEW surgical attending. Dr. Jasmine Ebott, MD - Maryland Oncology/Hematology jebott726@gmail.com Dr. Collin Sitler, DO, MC - Womack Army Medical Center in Fort Bragg, North Carolina  collin.sitler@gmail.com Aparna Kailasam, MD - Yale School of Medicine aparna.kailasam90@gmail.com This is the most fun podcast I have done so far. It is like a conversation among friends. Youll see that everyone has similar anxieties about starting off as attendings, but that with time and support, it all starts to feel more comfortable. In this podcast we discuss - Different practice patterns Asking for help Prepping for cases Fellowship training What to look for in a job and negotiating Having more control ...And so much more.! I really enjoyed this podcast and we are going to plan to put together a Gyn Onc mentorship Q&A soon!!

Research Guru Dr. Laura Chambers, DO Gynecologic Oncologist

If you're up to date on Gyn/Gyn Onc literature, then you already know of Dr. Laura Chambers! I first heard of Dr. Chambers through the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists and the multiple papers she has published.  She has authored/coauthored over 76 articles (that I noted on pubmed - likely more!). And one thing I love about this is that she is an Osteopathic doctor, which is a minority in our field and in research experience. Med school: Midwestern University Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine Residency: Cleveland Clinic Fellowship: Cleveland Clinic Currently: Assistant Professor in the Division of Gynecologic Oncology at The Ohio State University This is a great episode for anyone interested in pursing research and looking for guidance on how to start - as a student resident or even new attending! Also, anyone who is a DO and wanting some insight on becoming a subspecialist. Also, anyone interested in Gyn onc research especially related to gut metabolism - including patients! It is clear from this podcast that Dr. Chambers is an amazing human. I know you will enjoy this and learn SO much from her as I did.

Colorectal Surgeon Dr. Beth-Ann Shanker, MD: Job search, interviews and mentorship

I am so excited to introduce Dr. Beth Ann Shanker for this podcast. She is a colorectal surgeon and associate program director of the colorectal fellowship at Trinity Ann Arbor. I did a colorectal elective back in February at Trinity and I worked with Dr. Shanker. And it was right around when I was interviewing for jobs and she really took me under her wing and gave me so much useful and practical advice on interviewing negotiating - especially as a female surgeon. And I just knew I had to share it with you all! We not only talk about job searches early career asks non-negotiables, but also mentorship, how to practice hearing the answer 'No', And other interview skills! The overall theme of the podcast, I would say is job finding. However, there are so many other good topics in this podcast on personal development, life coaching, mentorship. I think you will all find something valuable in this podcast. A little introduction for Dr. Shanker - she did her medical school at the university of Rochester and then Rutgers University for general surgery residency. And then she did a MIS fellowship at Orlando regional medical, which also has an ACGME fellowship in colorectal surgery. She now works as a colorectal surgeon at Trinity and Arbor, and really loves her job! She's extremely passionate about colorectal surgery, preventative medicine. And she is just a wealth of knowledge. I'm so grateful that I got to work with her and I'm so grateful and honored that she is on this podcast with us to share her knowledge with all of you. So I hope you enjoy!

Career Series: Nichole Lugo, MD - Finding your first attending job

Nicole Lugo, MD is a current 3rd year Gyn Onc Fellow at City of Hope. I invited Nicole on the podcast to kick off our Career Series where we will have multiple podcasts and dedicated content on finding the attending job that is right for you! This is pretty near and dear to my heart as I also just went through the interview process and learned so much that I wish I would have known earlier! This podcast not only applies to Gyn Onc but could be applied to any speciality.  Nicole is from Puerto Rico and identified early that she wanted to go back to Puerto Rico. She tells us: -How she navigated a geographically limited job search -Networking and cover letters -Reaching out to places who don’t have listings -Academic vs private vs hybrid models -Contract information and so much more! I honestly wish I would have had this info when I was starting out in fellowship! I think anyone from resident to fellow can find this helpful and I hope you all send to your friends who will be looking for jobs in the next 1-3 years!
