Brother Breathe: Celebrating Black Mental Health

This week on Brother Breathe, I’m honored to be joined by Dr. Jonathan Shepherd, a nationally respected psychiatrist, leader, and advocate whose work sits at the powerful intersection of mental health, compassion, and community care. Dr. Shepherd is known for his trauma-informed, culturally responsive approach to adult mental health, supporting individuals navigating anxiety, depression, ADHD, and PTSD. His leadership and service have impacted countless lives, and this conversation is a needed reminder of what healing-centered care can look like. He currently serves as Chief Clinical Officer for Washington, D.C.’s Department of Behavioral Health, where he oversees services for children, families, and adults. Before that, he spent 12 years as Chief Medical Director at Hope Health Systems in Baltimore. Dr. Shepherd trained at the University of Illinois at Chicago, completed his child psychiatry fellowship at Johns Hopkins, and has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, a Distinguished Fellow of AACAP, and was inducted into the American College of Psychiatrists (2024). He is also the founder of Where Ministry & Medicine Flourish, a national platform that blends clinical expertise with faith-based mental health education through workshops, tours, and live events. This is a conversation about healing, leadership, and what it means to care for people with both excellence and humanity. Drop your thoughts in the comments, we welcome your reflections and feedback. Don’t forget to like, subscribe, and share this episode with someone who needs it. Brother Breathe: Celebrating Black Men In Education

This week on Brother Breathe, we continue our Black History Month celebration by honoring the brilliance, leadership, and impact of Black men in education. I’m joined by Dr. Chris Collins, scholar, advocate, and educator, for a powerful conversation on purpose, identity, and the work of supporting Black men across educational spaces. Dr. Collins brings a rich background in youth development, public policy, and research, and his voice is deeply needed in this moment. A major highlight of this episode is Dr. Collins’ dissertation research, which focused on identity development and the well-being of college-educated emerging adult Black men. His work helps us think more deeply about what it means for Black men not only to succeed, but to be well To connect with Dr. Collins, follow him on LinkedIn by searching Chris Collins. #BrotherBreathe #BlackHistoryMonth #BlackMenInEducation #DrChrisCollins #BlackScholars #HigherEducation #BlackMen #IdentityDevelopment #WellBeing #EmergingAdults #EducationMatters #ScholarAdvocate
