In this episode, John talked to Dr. John Lloyd who was the President of the Division for Research from 1996-1997. Before retiring, Dr. Lloyd was a professor at the University of Virginia, which is where I had the opportunity to know him. He is a leader in the field of learning disabilities and is committed to identifying evidence-based practices for students who struggled to learn. He is currently finishing a term as co-editor of Exceptional Children. In this conversation he discussed what he described as the de-institutionalization of schools, how his perspective on learning styles changed, and the importance of how we know what we know in special education research. Michael Gerber

In this episode, John talked to Dr. Michael Gerber who was President of the Division for Research from 1998-1999. Before retiring, Dr. Gerber was a professor in The Gervitz School at the University of California Santa Barbara and the director of the Center for Advanced Studies of Individual Differences in the Institute for Social, Behavioral, and Economic Research (ISBER). Dr. Gerber has over 120 peer-reviewed publications spanning the areas of spelling and writing, mathematics, instructional technology, and information processes of students with learning disabilities. In this conversation, Dr. Gerber explored how perspectives on equity and equality shape the field of special education, the role of teacher certification in rigorous teacher preparation, how schools influence teachers' decision-making, and a wide range of other topics. Susan Osborne

Dr. Osborne holds a PhD from the University of Virginia and is an Associate Professor Emerita at North Carolina State University. Sydney Zentall

In this episode, John talked to Dr. Sydney Zentall who was President of the Division for Research from 1990-1991. Dr. Zentall is professor emerita at Purdue University. Before a career in research, she was a general and special educator. For over three decades in education, she examined students with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder through her research. A major contribution of her work is a model explaining how high or low levels of sensory input can result in behaviors typical of students with ADHD and autism. In our conversation, she described how her family inspired her interest in special education, her roots in the field of psychology, and how the study of pigeons translated into a career in special education research.
