Acerca de Tails of Resilience

Title: Tails of Resilience By: ZodiPaws, in partnership with Animal Rescue Hub Tails of Resilience is a podcast that honors the stories of the people behind animal rescue—from domestic shelters to wildlife rehab, vet clinics to bird sanctuaries, rural transport routes to farm animal havens. Hosted by Jolene Feeney, a mental health therapist and lifelong animal lover, this podcast explores the emotional realities of direct animal care: the heartbreak, the healing, and the resilience it takes to keep showing up. Each episode features honest, heart-centered conversations with animal advocates across every field—shelter staff, veterinary professionals, wildlife responders, bird and farm animal caretakers, transport coordinators, and more. Whether it’s a story of saving a life, losing one, or simply staying present through the chaos, this show uplifts the voices that often go unheard—and reminds us that resilience comes in many forms, both human and animal. Produced by ZodiPaws in partnership with Animal Rescue Hub, Tails of Resilience is part of a larger mission to support the people who care for animals and the animals who transform us in return.

In this episode of Tails of Resilience, Jolene sits down with Dr. Megan Gottschalk, veterinarian and founder of Bradford’s Second Chance Rescue. Inspired by her beloved dog Bradford, the rescue is a foster-based nonprofit dedicated to helping animals receive the medical care they need, supporting community members trying to help animals in crisis, and helping pets find their forever homes. While working full time as a veterinarian, Dr. Megan also leads this growing 501(c)(3) organization with the help of an incredible network of veterinarians, fosters, and animal lovers who share her mission of giving animals a second chance. In this conversation, Dr. Megan shares the story behind the rescue, the perseverance it took to pursue veterinary medicine despite challenges with ADHD and school, and the compassion that guides her work with both animals and the people who love them. Her story is a powerful reminder that resilience often grows from passion, persistence, and the belief that every animal deserves another chance.   ⚠️ Trigger Warning: Trigger Warning: This episode contains discussions of suicide and mental health challenges related to trauma and high-stress caregiving roles, as well as references to animal suffering and death. Tails of Resilience x Noelle Almrud, Director of Operations at Beagle Freedom Project

In this episode of Tails of Resilience, I sit down with Noelle Almrud, Director of Operations at Beagle Freedom Project — the world’s leading organization dedicated to rescuing and rehoming animals used in experimental research while advancing education and legislation to end animal testing. Noelle shares her deeply personal journey from a stable, well-paying corporate career into the world of animal welfare — a leap that felt risky on paper but absolutely aligned with who she is and where she was meant to be. We explore: * What it’s really like to work in sanctuaries and organizations committed to stopping animal cruelty * The resilience required to sustain long-term policy and legislative work * How incremental wins in advocacy fuel hope and momentum * Compassion fatigue, boundary-setting, and recognizing warning signs before burnout * Supporting teams in high-impact, high-emotion work * The importance of educating the public — and why many people simply don’t know what happens to animals in research settings Through their mission to Educate. Legislate. Liberate., Beagle Freedom Project is not only saving lives — they are shifting systems and building awareness so future generations can make more informed, compassionate choices. This conversation is a powerful reminder that resilience isn’t about hardening — it’s about staying engaged without losing yourself in the work.   ⚠️ Trigger Warning: Trigger Warning: This episode contains discussions of suicide and mental health challenges related to trauma and high-stress caregiving roles, as well as references to animal suffering and death. Tails of Resilience x Kelli Delperdang, Marketing and Communications Manager with Street Dog Heros

In this episode of Tails of Resilience, we’re joined by Kelli Delperdang, Marketing & Communications Manager at Street Dog Hero, for a powerful conversation about purpose, boundaries, and hope in the nonprofit animal welfare space. Kelli shares how working in animal welfare has always been a career goal — and what it means to now help tell the stories of dogs rescued from some of the most difficult conditions imaginable. We talk about Street Dog Hero’s life-saving work, with a special focus on international spay and neuter efforts in Mexico, and the realities of bringing street dogs to the United States to give them a chance at a better quality of life. Kelli reflects on how deeply the contrast between these worlds stays with you once you’ve seen it firsthand. We also explore the unique challenges of working in marketing and communications for a rescue organization — including how to tell stories that honor a dog’s full humanity without reducing them to their trauma. Kelli speaks openly about learning to set boundaries around social media so her mind can truly rest, and how unplugging to hike with her dogs helps her stay grounded. One of the most moving moments of the conversation centers on Snacks, a resilient street dog in Mexico who was once malnourished and covered in ticks, yet still radiated joy. Today, Snacks is thriving in a loving home and living her very best life — a reminder of what’s possible when compassion meets action. This episode is a heartfelt look at how resilience shows up in animals, in the people who advocate for them, and in the quiet choices we make to keep showing up.   ⚠️ Trigger Warning: Trigger Warning: This episode contains discussions of suicide and mental health challenges related to trauma and high-stress caregiving roles, as well as references to animal suffering and death. Tails of Resilience x Harrison Edell, CEO of PAWS

This week on Tails of Resilience, we had the honor of sitting down with Harrison Edell, CEO of PAWS—a leader with more than two decades of experience across animal care, conservation, and nonprofit leadership. Harrison shared powerful stories about the wide-ranging impact of PAWS’ work—from rescuing and rehoming our domestic dog and cat companions, to rehabilitating wild animals of all kinds, from birds to bears. His perspective on recognizing the similarities across species and rescue work—rather than getting stuck in the differences—offers a refreshing and unifying lens for those working in animal welfare. We explored the importance of collaboration, learning from those who came before us, and resisting the urge to reinvent the wheel. Harrison emphasized how critical it is to rely on trained experts when encountering an injured or orphaned wild animal, reminding us that even well-intentioned human intervention can cause lifelong harm without proper guidance. Our conversation also dove into the three pillars of resilience—physical, intellectual, and emotional—and how Harrison supports his own wellbeing while leading mission-driven teams. Drawing on twenty years in the field, he shared grounded, heartfelt wisdom for anyone navigating the challenges, pressures, and emotional weight of animal welfare work. It’s a rich, inspiring episode filled with compassion, clarity, and hard-earned insight. You won’t want to miss it. ⚠️ Trigger Warning: Trigger Warning: This episode contains discussions of suicide and mental health challenges related to trauma and high-stress caregiving roles, as well as references to animal suffering and death.
