Acerca de The Friday ReFresh

Hello and welcome to the Friday ReFresh, a Ben and Travis podcast. I’m Ben from Ben and Travis and I have been working as a minister for 23 years and as a counselor for the last 10 years. I recognize that there are a lot of things in our world that impact different people in different ways. Working in counseling I’ve learned that there are a lot more things that can rock our world that I never knew existed. Many of those things are hidden struggles that others may never know about — or at least they don’t know about until something comes along and quite literally “opens up a can” of past trauma or hidden struggles. So I invite you to come along with me on this journey of exploration and understanding through this podcast which offers short episodes and hopefully informational and motivational material to help you as you prepare for the last day of the week. Not every episode will be about a mental health struggle but there will certainly be weeks that are. Sometimes we will just hope to give you a boost as you close out the week. However, there are some rules of engagement here though - some understanding that I want you to have before you agree to go on the journey. 1. Keep An Open Mind - Some of the things we talk about here may be new territory. It may be like one of those movies like Journey to the Center of the Earth where you see things that seem hard to comprehend. I know there were a lot of things that were hard for me to grasp at first and has certainly been hard to relate to others. So think of it like Journey to the Center of Your Soul. 2. It’s an Ever-Changing Landscape - The counseling field is something that seems to change all the time so understand that I may say some things that may be different than what you might have been taught in the past. It may also change as I record these over time. It is also true that various theories of counseling reveal different techniques for dealing with things so I will likely be sharing things from a wide variety of therapeutic mindsets. 3. No Two Experiences are the Same - Just because we share a thought about anxiety or depression doesn’t mean it will apply to every person who hears and so this is certainly not a replacement for good person centered counseling - but you may very well find some helpful tips for various things you may face. So, do you think you are good to start that journey? I hope so. Travis and I hope through this short podcast, along with the weekly Helping, Healing, Humor Podcast and our website to bring a better understanding of mental health to all people but especially to the church. It is a part of us that has been ignored for far too long. I hope that even in this short little podcast to help us have a little more understanding.

Welcome in to the Friday Refresh, brought to you by Team Ben and Travis for St. Jude Marathon Weekend. We are all raising money to help with cancer research at St. Jude and we would love for you to help us out. And by the way, send up an extra prayer of thanksgiving for Travis receiving the good news of “cured” from leukemia! All those folks who donated for years and years to cancer research at St. Jude might just have helped make that possible. Go to http://Benandtravis.com [http://Benandtravis.com] and follow the links to give to St. Jude and support our run. The school year is winding down. We are at that point in the year when many of the days are filled with fun activities or tying up the loose ends of the school year and praying every day that the break will hurry up and arrive. There are picnics, awards days, and outdoor fun days — basically “let’s get through the end of the year without a complete meltdown days.” Links mentioned in this episode: * http://www.benandtravis.com [http://www.benandtravis.com] * http://www.facebook.com/groups/benandtravis [http://www.facebook.com/groups/benandtravis] * http://www.patreon.com/benandtravis [http://www.patreon.com/benandtravis] * Reframing Hope Book https://www.benandtravis.com/books [https://www.benandtravis.com/books] * Helping. He needed some financial help. Their band’s name was Dire Straights. And they needed another band member for their world tour. It was the perfect opportunity. Both parties mutually getting what they needed. And who knows how that could have turned out for both of them. The world will never know. Because  he turned the band down. It was around the year 1989 and this up and coming star wanted nothing more than to make his mark on the country music world. He called them back and regretfully declined because he felt he could do something great in the country world. And so a man with financial difficulties chose to stay there and the band would have to find someone else. Find Your Chill

Welcome in the Friday Refresh brought to you by the Adventures of Ben and Travis and the Divided Kingdom - PREORDER TIME! We have gotten amazing reviews on our first two books - The WorryCoaster and the Joy Rider and if you don’t have those you can order your copy today...but while you are at it, preorder the Divided Kingdom to help us get those out. In this installment Ben and Travis will be facing off against some dragons of loneliness, self-doubt, and jealousy that some kids have to face when they go through big changes like their parents going through divorce. You guys have been so kind already in purchasing the book and giving us kind comments...we can’t wait to see what else is in store. Go to BenandTravis.com today. It immediately changes the mood of the room. It is really amazing how our senses work. All year I have struggled with a few of my classes at school with them getting loud while they are supposed to be having quiet time working on their iPads doing work in reading and math. But they get to cutting up and playing rather than working. But that changed a little this week. I decided to turn on a YouTube kids channel that plays relaxing music and shows calming images of animals and sea creatures. The Darkest Brightest Day

Passover was always a reminder of both the bad things of the world and the wonderful ways of God. On one hand the Passover was dark. Sacrifices. Blood on the door frame. A death angel. Darkness that sticks with you for generations. A reminder of the human condition. But at the same time the Passover was a bright light for a people enslaved. It was hope. It was freedom. It was a people getting their life back after years of hurt and pain. And that is the reason it was memorialized. Stories that would be repeated for generations. A memorial meal to help the people reflect on the powerful moment that God delivered them from Egyptian captivity. Songs and scriptures that would be memorized and repeated year after year. God’s love on full display for His people. Tsunami and Influence

This is your Friday Refresh brought to you by The Adventures of Ben and Travis and the JoyRider. The books are here. We think they have a great message that helps kids and adults alike to think about including others, handling difficult situations, and navigating strong emotions. Thanks to Jacob’s excellent artwork they are also a lot of fun to look at. Go to BenandTravis.com/books and get yours today. Have you ever wondered if what you say or do even matters? I work at a school all day with kids whose ages from 4 year old to Seniors. I mostly see kids up through 5th grade but occasionally have the chance to visit with the older ones. And regardless of what age you teach or what age kids you might be parenting, there are usually times when you feel like your words fall on deaf ears and your actions go unnoticed. However, you may have a difficult time convincing Andrew Kearney of that.
