“He Abused and Threatened to Kill Me” – Facebook Relationship Turned Into a Nightmare for Nompumelelo

25-year-old Nompumelelo Malabela shares her powerful story of surviving rape by a man she met on Facebook and the emotional aftermath of seeking justice. Despite reporting the case and providing evidence, she faces silence from the authorities. This episode also features Nompumelelo, who opens up about food insecurity and dropping out of university. A heartfelt conversation on gender-based violence, mental health, and resilience. Trigger warning: sensitive content. In this raw and deeply moving episode, we share the story of Nompumelelo Malabela, a 25-year-old university student who courageously speaks out about her experience with gender-based violence. After meeting a man on Facebook and developing what she believed was a genuine relationship, she was lured to his home—where she was violently raped. This traumatic event marked the third time she had experienced sexual assault. What makes Nompumelelo’s story even more heartbreaking is what followed. Despite her strength in reporting the assault to the police and providing screenshots, names, and information about another possible victim, her case has been met with silence and inaction. The investigating officer has failed to provide support or progress, leaving her feeling unsafe, unsupported, and disillusioned by the very system meant to protect her. The perpetrator not only blocked her on all platforms but also offered her money to withdraw the case—an attempt to silence and erase her experience. Even with some emotional support from the University of Limpopo’s gender desk and counseling services, Nompumelelo’s trust in the justice system continues to fade. Her bravery in sharing her story is not just a personal act of survival—it’s a bold call to action. A plea for justice. A demand for accountability. A reminder that so many survivors continue to be failed by institutional systems and silenced by societal stigma. This episode also introduces us to Bumi, a former university student whose life was interrupted by financial hardship. After four years of dedication to her studies, she was forced to drop out due to food insecurity and lack of financial support. Her story reflects the emotional burden of navigating life in survival mode—struggling to hold onto dreams while facing the realities of poverty, hunger, and mental exhaustion. Together, these stories paint a haunting yet empowering portrait of young women in South Africa who are fighting to reclaim their voices in the face of trauma, abandonment, and systemic failure. These are not just stories of victimhood—they are testimonies of strength, survival, and truth. By listening, we stand in solidarity with survivors and shine a light on the issues too often left in the dark—sexual violence, mental health, institutional neglect, and economic hardship. Trigger Warning: This episode contains content related to rape, emotional trauma, and mental health struggles. Listener discretion is strongly advised. If you or someone you know has experienced gender-based violence or is in crisis, please reach out to a local support organization or helpline. You are not alone, and your story matters.
