Chapter 10: The Mystery Solved

As the box hit the floor of the chopper, the electronics went haywire, its lights flickering wildly. “It’s a trap!” the pilot screamed. The helicopter, unable to stabilize its flight with the box’s interference, was forced to land and shut down. Minutes later, the real authorities—led by a friend of Papa’s from the “International Mystery Bureau”—swarmed the clearing. The man in the trench coat and his partner were led away in handcuffs. “I’m sorry I kept this from you,” Papa said, hugging all four of them as the sun began to peek through the clouds. “I was a scout for the Bureau years ago. That box contains the codes for a global satellite network. Those men were ‘The Shadow Syndicate,’ trying to steal it back.” “So we’re officially detectives?” Aiden asked, holding his stick high. “The best I’ve ever seen,” Papa smiled. Back at the big house, as the twins, Emma, and Aiden sat on the porch eating a celebratory snack of apples and cheese, Michael looked at the brass compass. It was still in his pocket. Suddenly, the needle gave a sharp twitch. It wasn’t pointing at the woods anymore. It was pointing directly at the old well in the middle of the yard—a well they had been told never to open. “Hey guys,” Michael whispered, his eyes gleaming with the thrill of a new case. “I think the Mystery of the Whispering Woods was just the beginning.” Read more at Hartman Mysteries [https://hartmanmysteries.com/chapter-10-the-mystery-solved/]

episode Chapter 9: The Final Confrontation cover

Chapter 9: The Final Confrontation

“There’s an emergency exit!” Aiden shouted, pointing to a red handle shaped like a fire extinguisher. Michael pulled it. A section of the floor dropped away like an elevator, lowering them rapidly until they reached the very bottom—the secret tunnel they had been in earlier! They burst through the potting shed and sprinted into the woods, the storm now a full-blown roar. The “Whispering Woods” were no longer whispering; they were screaming with the sound of a hovering aircraft. In the clearing, a sleek, black helicopter with no markings was descending. They saw the man in the trench coat and the man in the uniform dragging a familiar figure toward the chopper. “Papa!” Emma yelled. The villains spun around, shocked. “The kids! Get the box!” the trench coat man barked. “Now, Olivia!” Michael signaled. Olivia used the brass compass. She had figured out that when she turned the dial, the humming from the box grew louder. A high-pitched frequency erupted from the box, so sharp that the two villains dropped their flashlights and clutched their ears, howling in pain. Aiden didn’t miss his chance. He charged forward and tripped the man in the uniform with his trusty stick. “Michael, the box! Throw it!” Papa yelled, breaking free from his captors. Michael launched the wooden box through the air. But he didn’t throw it to Papa. He threw it straight into the open door of the helicopter. As the box hit the floor of the chopper, the internal magnets in the Lookout Room’s system engaged. The helicopter’s electronics went haywire, its lights flickering wildly. “It’s a trap!” the pilot screamed. episode Chapter 8: The Lookout Room cover

Chapter 8: The Lookout Room

Instead of falling into a fireplace, the children slid down a smooth metal chute that deposited them onto a plush, velvet-covered floor. Michael clicked his flickering flashlight on. “Whoa,” Aiden breathed, looking around. They were in a room that shouldn’t have existed. It was a perfectly circular chamber hidden right in the center of the house’s massive chimney stack. The walls were lined with brass telescopes, strange radio equipment with glowing vacuum tubes, and rows of leather-bound journals. “This is the Lookout Room,” Olivia whispered. “Papa isn’t just a gardener… he’s been watching for something.” Michael approached a large desk in the center. On it sat a base that perfectly matched the wooden box they had found. He placed the box onto the pedestal. Suddenly, the room whirred to life. The brass telescopes began to move on their own, pointing out through hidden slits in the brickwork toward the woods. On the wall, a giant glass map lit up, showing a pulsing red dot deep in the forest—exactly where they had found the box. “It’s a tracking station,” Michael realized. “The box isn’t just a box—it’s the key to the whole system!” Emma was looking at the journals. “Michael! Look at the name on the cover!” Before he could read it, a hidden speaker crackled to life. A voice they recognized—the man in the uniform from the car—boomed through the room. “We know you’re in the chimney, children. But you’ve made a mistake. By activating the box, you’ve signaled the Retrieval Team. They’ll be landing in the clearing in five minutes. And we have your grandfather.” The children looked at the glass map. The red dot was now surrounded by three blue dots. “They’ve captured him,” Olivia gasped. “We have to get to the woods!” Read more at Hartman Mysteries [https://hartmanmysteries.com/chapter-8-the-lookout-room/]

episode Chapter 7: The Gables of Peril cover

Chapter 7: The Gables of Peril

The searchlight blinded them, turning the rain into stinging needles of white light. “Stay where you are!” the man shouted from below. “We can’t go down, and we can’t go back,” Emma whimpered. “We go up,” Michael said, looking at the steep pitch of the roof. “If we can get to the chimney, there’s a lightning rod we can use to steady ourselves. There’s a crawlspace vent on the other side of the house!” With the precision of a mountain climber, Michael helped Aiden onto the slippery shingles. They crawled upward, their fingers clawing at the wet wood. Below them, they heard a massive crash—the villains had finally breached the attic door, shoving the heavy trunk aside. “They’re on the roof!” the man in the trench coat yelled from the attic window. The children reached the massive brick chimney just as a hand reached out of the window and grabbed Michael’s ankle. “Gotcha!” the man hissed. “Let him go!” Aiden yelled, swinging his walking stick with all his five-year-old might. He whacked the man’s knuckles, causing him to howl and release his grip. They scrambled around the chimney, hidden from view for a brief moment. Michael pulled the brass compass from his pocket. It wasn’t spinning anymore. It was pointing straight down… into the chimney? “The map!” Olivia gasped, looking at the vellum. “The ‘Lookout Tower’ isn’t a building in the woods. This house is the tower! The chimney has a hidden flue!” Michael felt around the brickwork until his fingers found a loose stone. He pulled, and a narrow iron ladder revealed itself inside the soot-stained darkness of the chimney. “Down! Quick!” Michael urged. One by one, they disappeared into the dark. But as the last of them entered, the man in the trench coat appeared around the corner of the chimney, a cruel smile on his face as he reached for the hidden lever. episode Chapter 6: The Siege of the Attic cover

Chapter 6: The Siege of the Attic

A heavy fist pounded on the oak door, making the hinges groan. “We know you’re in there, kids,” the oily voice of the man in the trench coat called out. “Make it easy on yourselves. Just slide the box under the door.” “Not a chance!” Michael shouted back, his voice cracking only slightly. He looked around the attic for a weapon or a way out. “Michael, look!” Olivia whispered, pointing to the floor. A thin trail of gray smoke was beginning to seep under the door. “Are they trying to smoke us out?” Emma gasped, her eyes watering. “No,” Michael realized, sniffing the air. “That’s not wood smoke… it smells like… sulfur?” The handle of the door began to glow a dull, angry red. The men outside weren’t using a crowbar; they were using something much more high-tech—a thermal cutter. The metal of the lock was starting to liquefy. “They’re coming through!” Aiden cried, clutching his stick. “The window!” Olivia pointed to the small, circular window at the peak of the roof. “It leads to the gables. We can climb onto the porch roof!” “It’s too high for Aiden,” Michael said grimly. He looked at the glowing door, then at the heavy trunk they hadn’t opened yet. “Help me push this!” Michael, Olivia, and Emma threw their weight against the massive iron-bound trunk, sliding it across the floorboards until it blocked the door. Just as they shoved it into place, a white-hot spark burst through the wood of the door. The trunk gave them seconds, but not minutes. Michael scrambled to the window and kicked out the glass. The wind and rain lashed inside. “Out! Now!” Michael commanded. But as Olivia climbed onto the ledge, she looked down and let out a scream. The second man—the one in the uniform—was standing on the lawn below, pointing a high-powered searchlight right at them.
