episode The Vintage Fantasy Draft + Collector Strategy + Eye Appeal Reality | Ep 16 cover

The Vintage Fantasy Draft + Collector Strategy + Eye Appeal Reality | Ep 16

Episode 16 of Vintage Spotlight brings something new to the table as we run our first ever vintage baseball fantasy draft, focused strictly on non-rookie cards from the pre-1953 era. This one was pure fun, but also revealing. Different approaches, different philosophies, and a reminder of just how deep the vintage pool really is when you move beyond rookie cards. We each draft five cards, explain our thinking, and open it up to you to tell us what we missed and whose list you’re taking. From there, we shift into one of the biggest conversations happening in the hobby right now: eye appeal and the rise of sticker services. We break down what’s actually going on, who the players are, how the systems differ, and why this movement is gaining traction whether people like it or not. This isn’t just about stickers. It’s about how collectors evaluate cards, where value comes from, and whether technical grading is enough anymore. Let us know in the comments: Which draft list you prefer? What your top five would be? Where you stand on eye appeal vs technical grade? 📺 Subscribe to Sports Cards Live for weekly deep dives and live shows 🧢 Check out Just Collect for more vintage content and insights 📘 Grab a copy of POPS & COMPS on Amazon to level up your understanding of the hobby 🔍 Explore auctions across the hobby at AuctionWire.ai 🧭 Take the Hobby Spectrum assessment and join the directory Next episode we continue the draft format with 1954–1989. episode “Winning the Hobby” with Vintage: Non Rookies, Eye Appeal, and Market Reality cover

“Winning the Hobby” with Vintage: Non Rookies, Eye Appeal, and Market Reality

We are back with Episode 15 of The Vintage Spotlight. Jeremy Lee (Sports Cards Live) is joined by Leighton Sheldon (Just Collect) for a collector-first conversation about “winning the hobby” without feeling trapped by rookie cards or a number on a slab. We start with a simple idea: if you only chase rookies, you are leaving an entire world of vintage beauty on the table. Then we shift into one of the clearest real-world examples of eye appeal being rewarded: the 1948 Leaf Jackie Robinson in a PSA 1 holder that sold for premium money because it looks incredible. From there, we connect it to the record SGC 7 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle private sale and what it says about buyers prioritizing the card over the label. We wrap by talking about the growing role of private sale brokers and why more collectors are paying for help hunting the right card. If you are listening on audio, the cards we reference are shown on YouTube on The Vintage Spotlight channel. Shoutouts and mentions: * Philly Show and how it continues to level up * Eye Appeal and why more collectors are thinking like “card first, label second” * Card Ladder and global population reporting * Auction Wire as a way to track the broader market Jeremy’s book POPs & COMPs is available on Amazon. If you want a deeper look at how comps, population, and private sales fit into the hobby’s pricing reality, it’s a strong companion to the topics we covered today. Recorded February 26, 2026. 3 Vintage Sets, 3 Big Stories: M101 Ruth Rookie, 1956 Topps, 1951 Bowman

On Episode 14 of The Vintage Spotlight, Jeremy Lee and Leighton Sheldon go set-by-set and story-by-story through three vintage classics, with a couple of hobby twists along the way. We cover: the 1916 M101-4/5 Babe Ruth rookie and the whole “multiple backs” rabbit hole, including the Morehouse angle and what “canceled” examples can tell us. Then we hit the 70th anniversary year of 1956 Topps Baseball, why the design still resonates, and why the 1956 Mantle remains a centerpiece card. Finally, Leighton shares a shop walk-in story featuring two 1951 Bowman Mantles plus a Willie Mays rookie, and what it feels like to see true fresh vintage surface in the wild. To close it out, Jeremy shows a personal favorite vintage card from his PC and Leighton shares a surprise group of vintage in-person autograph cards from the 60s and 70s. episode Rare T215 Red Cross Nashville Find + Jefferson Burdick Questions + Mickey Mantle Giveaway cover

Rare T215 Red Cross Nashville Find + Jefferson Burdick Questions + Mickey Mantle Giveaway

Vintage Spotlight Episode 13 brings together Leighton Sheldon of Just Collect and Jeremy Lee to share the full story behind a fresh T215 Red Cross tobacco card find that surfaced from a family collection in Nashville, Tennessee. In this episode, Leighton walks through how one vague email turned into a major vintage discovery, why photos and provenance matter so much when you are evaluating old cardboard, and how he balances honest appraisals with the reality that Just Collect is in the business of buying and selling cards. You will hear how this family collection produced sixteen T215 Red Cross cards, why two stayed behind with the owner’s sons, and what that says about nostalgia and the future of the hobby. From there, Jeremy and Leighton dig into where T215 Red Cross cards really sit in the early tobacco landscape. Should Type 1 Red Cross cards be considered part of the T206 family or a separate issue entirely. How much weight should we still give to Jefferson Burdick’s American Card Catalog in light of what we know today. And what do you do when there are barely any comps, only a couple hundred graded examples, and collectors trying to complete impossible sets. You will also get an update on AuctionWire.ai as it heads into beta, a quick check in on Jeremy’s upcoming book POPs & COMPs, and details on how to enter a very cool vintage giveaway. 🎁 Vintage Spotlight giveaway Leighton is giving away a vintage Mickey Mantle card graded SGC 3 to one viewer. episode 1933 Goudey Bombshell: #106 Proof? + Lajoie vs. Full Set + Indian Gum + Managing Counterfeits cover

1933 Goudey Bombshell: #106 Proof? + Lajoie vs. Full Set + Indian Gum + Managing Counterfeits

Hosts Jeremy Lee and Leighton Sheldon welcome legendary Baltimore collector Dan McKee for a rich dive into 1933 Goudey and the hobby stories that bring it to life. We cover the origin of Nap Lajoie card 106, why some copies were mailed with staple holes, and whether a full Goudey set without Lajoie can beat the single card in today’s market. Dan also shares a striking claim about the popularity of Goudey Indian Gum with kids in 1933, and we explore a little-known proof curiosity involving a Leo Durocher card numbered 106. Along the way we hit collecting philosophy, raw vs. graded, counterfeit detection, and the joy of handling cards. Highlights • Nap Lajoie 106 history and mail-in stories • Set vs. single: take Lajoie or the rest of 1933 Goudey • Why Indian Gum may have outpaced baseball with kids in 1933 • Possible Leo Durocher 106 proof and what it could mean • Raw binders, card handling, and the smell test for counterfeits • Dan’s path from Old Judge to 1950s sets and his 1910 Washington Times favorite • Type collecting vs. “flight collecting” for smarter sampling • PSA Registry gaps and how oddball proofs fit in • Display pieces, wrappers, and advertising for set companions Guest: Dan McKee, long-time vintage collector from Baltimore Hosts: Jeremy Lee and Leighton Sheldon Listen and watch on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts. Liker at det er både Podcaster (godt utvalg) og lydbøker i samme app, pluss at man kan holde Podcaster og lydbøker atskilt i biblioteket.
Bra app. Oversiktlig og ryddig. MYE bra innhold⭐️⭐️⭐️
