Hope Revives Through Collaboration: What Has Saved Al Arayis Pond?

Produced and Narrated by Musab Subuh Water remains a source of hope, the essence of life, and transboundary resources have long held the potential to bring communities together. The prolonged drought that affected Al Arayis Pond in Jordan and Mzaireeb Lake in Syria offers a stark reminder of the region’s vulnerability. Communities on both sides felt the loss deeply, but they also shared a renewed commitment to addressing these challenges with cooperation, dignity, and empathy. These environmental pressures are encouraging joint efforts, rooted in the region’s cultural heritage of resilience, to strengthen cooperation between institutions, experts, and local communities. Al Arayis Pond, once heavily impacted, now stands as a symbol of how collective action and dialogue can turn difficulty into progress. This episode follows a journey to the Yarmouk Forest Reserve, Al Arayis Pond, Irbid, Jarash, Ajloun, Azraq Wetlands Reserve to witness the survival of the pond, the survival of the river turtle, the Sirhani Kili Fish, the only endemic fish species in Jordan, and its message for our shared future. Through conversations with Mohammed Malkawi, Hazem Hreishah, the reserves managers, the local communities on both sides, and meetings with officials from both countries, Musab heard a refrain: what used to divide now unites, and Hope Revives Through Collaboration. Azraq Water Oases: The Story of Nature and Water Between the Past and the Present | واحات الأزرق المائية: حكاية الطبيعة والمياه ما بين الماضي والحاضر

Al-Azraq Wetland was once a rich marshland, full of life and migratory birds. It served as a key resting stop along the migration route for birds traveling between Asia, Africa, and Europe. Today, however, the oasis is gradually drying up due to excessive groundwater pumping to meet the needs of nearby cities. This highlights the urgent need for regional cooperation—not only to save Al-Azraq, but also to protect one of the most important cross-border ecological corridors in the region.
