After the Operation Blue Star in 1984, the assassination of Indira Gandhi and the massacre of Sikhs, peace was restored in Punjab under the President's rule till 1992. In October 1984, Indira Gandhi's bodyguards Beant Singh and Satwant Singh were shot dead by the Sikhs who wanted to avenge the loss of the Akal Takht in the Harmandir Sahib of Amritsar in Operation Blue Star.
