OUR VOICES S7E3 - The beginning of Amsterdam City Rights

In this episode, we dive into the Amsterdam City Rights movement—a unique bottom-up movement in Amsterdam fighting for the rights of undocumented people in the city. We’ll talk with Hidaya Nampiima, Ugandanhuman rights advocate, once the most famous undocumented person and today one of the most outspoken refugee activists in Amsterdam, and Savannah Koolen, founder and director of Here to Support and with more than ten years experience in advocating for undocumented people’s rights.  Amsterdam City Rights is a coalition of people with and without residency permits, created in 2018 from a grassroot community protesting against the unjust asylum system and xenophobic migration policies. The community meets twice a month to discuss common projects and ideas, participates in demonstrations, conferences and workshops. Amsterdam City Rights has been creating many projects and today manages the City Rights Radio and the City Rights App, with the help of the NGO Here to Support. This is Our Voices, a series about the stories of different migrant movements that stood the test of time and made history in Amsterdam. Hosted by Mohamed Bah, produced by Riccardo Biggi and brought to you by Here to Support, and supported by Action for Visibility, an alliance of Amsterdammers committed to social justice.  This is more than just a conversation—it’s a call to action! 🎙 City Rights Radio is a platform amplifying the voices of migrants, undocumented people, and marginalized communities. OUR VOICES S7E2 - The We Are Here movement

Fighting for visibility and basic human rights in 2012 In this episode, we talk with Yoonis Osman Noor, activist from Somalia, about the We Are Here movement—a landmark protest in Amsterdam’s activist history that sparked change for undocumented communities across the Netherlands. Yoonis is a human rights defender andone of the spokesmen of the movement.  We Are Here started in 2012 when a group of squatting migrants began protesting against the lack of shelters for undocumented people and the unjust asylum system. This protest resulted in the rise of public awareness and recognition of the issues faced by rejected asylum seekers, with the opening of shelters known as BBB (Bed, Bad, Brood), and the LVV (Landelijke Vreemdelingenvoorzieningen [https://www.dienstterugkeerenvertrek.nl/over-dtv/leidraad-terugkeer-en-vertrek/opvanglocaties/de-landelijke-vreemdelingenvoorzieningen-lvv]). OUR VOICES S7E1 – From the White Illegals to Undocumented Activism in the ‘90s

In this episode, with Hans Krikke, a journalist and historian, we dive into the history of migrant activism in the Netherlands. Hans is an activist, founder and director of Ru Paré, and author of the book "Witte Illegalen in Hongerstaking" (White Illegals in Hungerstrike). The Witte Illegalen (White Illegals), were Turkish, Moroccan and Kurdish people who were invited to the Netherlands to work in the 60s and 70s, but then the Dutch state wanted to send them back to their countries. Without other options, they had to fight for their rights to be recognised in this country.
