GREENVILLE AMERICAN LEGION MORE THAN A VETERANS CLUB
Many people recognize the name “American Legion,” but not everyone truly understands what the organization does or who it serves. In this episode of the Discover Montcalm Podcast, Jerry Collins from the Greenville American Legion joined hosts Duane Weed and Cara Stevens to talk about the mission of the American Legion, the support it provides to veterans and families, and why community involvement matters more than ever.
For Jerry, the American Legion became more than just a place to gather. It became a source of camaraderie, understanding, and support.
Jerry moved to Greenville in 1988 after growing up in southwest Wyoming. Over the years, he discovered that Montcalm County offers something special — a close-knit community where people help each other. That same sense of connection is what he found through the American Legion.
GREENVILLE AMERICAN LEGION WHAT IS THE AMERICAN LEGION?
One of the biggest misconceptions discussed during the podcast is that the American Legion is simply a private club for veterans. Jerry explained that while the organization does support veterans, it is also deeply involved in serving the community.
The American Legion was founded in 1919 following World War I to help veterans returning home from war. Many service members struggled to adjust to civilian life, and communities across the country needed support. The organization was created to help veterans connect with resources, advocate for benefits, and support one another.
Today, the American Legion continues that mission through community service, veteran outreach, and family support.
WHO CAN JOIN THE AMERICAN LEGION?
Many people assume you must have served in combat to join the American Legion, but Jerry explained that eligibility is broader than many realize.
A veteran who served at least one day of active duty and was honorably discharged can become a Legionnaire. Beyond that, there are several additional branches of the organization known as the Legion family:
* Sons of the American Legion – for sons, grandsons, and descendants of veterans
* Auxiliary – for family members connected to military service
* Legion Riders – motorcycle enthusiasts who support veteran and community causes
Jerry emphasized that the organization is built around family and service, not exclusivity.
GREENVILLE AMERICAN LEGION SUPPORTING VETERANS BEYOND THE MILITARY
One of the most important topics discussed was the support available for veterans after military service ends.
Jerry explained that many veterans leave the military without fully understanding the benefits available to them. The American Legion helps connect veterans with resources including:
* VA healthcare information
* Veterans benefits assistance
* Financial support resources
* Mental health support
* Community connections
* Equipment loans such as walkers, canes, and wheelchairs
The Greenville American Legion now hosts a Veteran Service Officer every third Thursday from 4:30–5:30 p.m. to answer questions and help veterans navigate paperwork and benefits.
Jerry also stressed the importance of mental health support and reminded listeners that veterans in crisis can call 988 and press 1 for immediate assistance.
GREENVILLE AMERICAN LEGION MORE THAN MEETINGS AND MEMBERSHIPS
The Greenville American Legion is also active in community events and activities throughout the year.
From bingo nights and Queen of Hearts drawings to poker runs, live music, car shows, and holiday parties, the Legion serves as a gathering place for veterans, families, and community members alike.
Jerry explained that the organization depends heavily on volunteers and community involvement. Whether someone helps cook meals, organize events, maintain the building, or simply spends time connecting with others, every contribution matters.
“Many hands make light work,” Jerry said during the conversation.
PRESERVING HISTORY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS
In addition to serving as historian for the Greenville American Legion, Jerry also helps maintain the organization’s website and historical records.
Part of his role involves preserving photographs, documents, and stories that reflect more than 100 years of local American Legion history. Jerry has been working to digitize records while also maintaining hard copies for future generations.
His work ensures the stories of local veterans and community efforts are not forgotten.
GREENVILLE AMERICAN LEGION A PLACE FOR VETERANS AND THE COMMUNITY
Throughout the interview, one message became clear: the American Legion is about connection.
For veterans, it can be a place to speak with others who understand military experiences. For families, it offers support and involvement. For the community, it provides events, volunteer opportunities, and assistance programs that benefit people throughout Montcalm County.
As older generations of veterans begin to fade, Jerry hopes younger veterans and community members will continue the mission and become involved.
