Red Dawn (1984) Podcast

Red Dawn is a film depicting the invasion of the United States from the south by Communist forces from Cuba, Nicaragua and the Soviet Union in what is to be the start of World War III. We picked this film partially because of the events currently occurring between Russian and the Ukraine. This seemed like a fitting film. It stars Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Jennifer Grey, Lea Thompson, Charlie Sheen and Powers Boothe all very early in their careers. The film begins with high school kids starting classes only to see paratroopers landing outside in a small mountain pass Colorado Town. As people were rounded up, some escaped and ran into the mountains to hide from enemy forces. Over several days, as they start to investigate what is happening, they decide they can start trying to take on the invading forces. They form a small militia called The Wolverines, named after there High School mascot. This movie follow the students journey together with the eventual addition of Powers Boothe’s character as a downed fighter pilot. Their journey takes them over several weeks while trying to take down enemy forces and reclaim their small mountain town. All in all, this is a fun watch. I will say this, as many from this period do, shows it’s age. If you can handle some of the poor effects, and some should have been deleted scenes this is a fun watch. It also serves as a cautionary tale as we discussed in the episode. Also worth noting there is a remake of this movie from 2012 staring Chris Hemsworth and Jeffery Dean Morgan. In the podcast I mentioned that I remembered liking that movie. While the action is better, I think the original may be an overall better movie. Spider-Man No Way Home (2021) Podcast

This week we decided to review the 2021 smash hit Spider-Man No Way Home. Knowing this was going to be difficult due to resident curmudgeon’s hate for Marvel movies we dove in anyway. This was kind of by accident. Some listeners suggested we do some more recent movies despite our genre being mostly pre 2000’s movies. But we happened to watch this movie when it dropped to streaming the same day. And a few short text messages later I knew this was the movie to review. Spoilers! Spider-Man No Way Home has a massive cast include all of our heroes from previous versions and many of the villains. Staring Tom Holland as Spider-Man they also pull in Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire from their respective “Multiverses”. This occurs because of Mysterio releasing the identity of Peter Parker. Peter, wanting to have his identity concealed turns to Dr. Strange to concoct a spell to reconceal his identity. In the process Peter keeps asking Dr. Strange to change the parameters of his spell which causes the Multiverse situation that brings everyone together. While I loved this film over all, it was not without some things that rubbed me the wrong way. For example, J.K. Simmons reprises his roll as J. Jonah Jameson. Jameson who is normally depicted as the publisher or editor in chief of the Daily Bugle plays more of an internet news personality. What results is somewhat of a terrible overacting annoying character. (Not unlike most YouTube news channels) While I appreciate the attempt to change the format based on current new consumption I felt this was poorly executed. Especially for an actor as strong as Simmons who previously was incredible in this roll. Much to my co-hosts displeasure, this film is loaded with many nods to previous movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Many of which I enjoyed, but the existence of which made him want to throw his remote. (He’s a cranky fella) All in all, I think this is a great film. There is a ton of nostalgia achieved by bringing in the other heroes and villains. The action sequences are well executed and if you’re a Marvel fan this is a fun edition to this MCU. The Running Man (1987) Podcast

The Running Man is a dystopian sci-fi action film that was loosely based off the Stephen King novel of the same name. It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maria Conchita Alonso, Richard Dawson, Yaphet Kotto, NFL’s Jim Brown, Dweezil Zappa and Jesse Ventura. In what is supposed to be a dystopian America in 2017, Ben Richards played by Arnold Schwarzenegger is piloting a helicopter that is has been ordered to fire on innocent civilians searching for food. After refusing, the other officers arrest him and he is sent to a labor camp. Eventually he is sent to compete in the nation’s most popular television show The Running Man. The Running Man, a reality TV show where contestants only goal is to survive until the end. All while being attacked by the shows “Stalkers” These stalkers all have their signature method of stalking and killing contestants. Because of their on screen persona, they also all have their own fan bases with many gambling the odds on the winner. I had fond memories of watching this movie when I was a child. After watching it again it did not disappoint as much as I expected. It’s an Arnold movie so it’s got it’s fair amount of cheese one liners. But the movie is fun, some of the kill scenes are creative and the cast at times is fantastic. This movie tries to combine all the action elements you’d expect with some quirky humor. If you haven’t seen it, or it’s been a while it’s worth the watch. Something that I didn’t realize was this stars Sven-Ole Thorsen who plays security. He also plays the security guard in Kevin Smith’s Mallrats. Which if I was a betting man was by design by Kevin Smith. Check out the trailer for The Running Man below. Check out the IMDB page for The Running Man here. [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093894/] And if you wanna watch a real stinker of a flick, watch the 1986 Sylvester Stallone movie Cobra. Here is our take on that film. Blast from the Past (1999) Movie Podcast

Hello Friends! In this weeks edition of the MovieMoshPit Podcast we discuss the 1999 classic Blast From The Past. This movie was written by Bill Kelly and Hugh Wilson. Hugh Wilson most notably was the creator of WKRP in Cincinnati. This movie stars Brendan Fraser, Alicia Silverstone, Christopher Walken, Sissy Spacek and Dave Foley. All of which have enjoyed huge careers of their own. Blast From The Past is a story about Brendan Fraser’s character (Adam) having to venture out into the world as a 35 year old who’s never been out of the family fall out shelter. During a bomb scare in the 60’s, Christopher Walken’s character (Calvin), and atomic age inventor, moves his pregnant wife Helen (Sissy Spacek) into their underground fallout shelter. Having mistaken a plane crash for a nuclear holocaust Calvin sets the locks for 35 years to keep his family safe below ground. Running low on supplies 35 years later they decide to let their son Adam, venture out into the world of Los Angeles to retrieve necessities. Boozy mom Helen sets him up with what little cash they had, stock certificates and baseball cards. But Adam’s only wish… Can I meet a girl. He meets Eve (Alicia Silverstone) in a sports memorabilia store where he’s about to get raked over the coals for the Mickey Mantel rookie card and the adventure begins. The movie is full of fun banter between extremely naive Adam, and had it with men Eve. Eve, who Adam hires to help him round up the list of supplies he’s to bring back to the fall out shelter. Blast from the Past is one of my personal favorite movies, I’ll watch it pretty much every time it’s on. Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek are fantastic in this movie. But when are they not? Also worth mentioning is Dave Foley. My first exposure to Dave was from the series The Kids in the Hall. Playing the roll of Eve’s roommate in this picture was good for some laughs. Point Break (1991) Review Podcast

Point Break (1991) This hit movie stared Patrick Swayze, Keanu Reeves, Gary Busey and Lori Petty as well as some other super notable actors. For Patrick Swayze this was another movie in a string of hits such as Dirty Dancing, Road House and Ghost. And for Keanu this was his next big hit after the first Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. Point Break is Johnny Utah (Keanu) as a young FBI agent paired with Gary Busey’s character Angelo Pappas. Angel has been working a case chasing a gang of bank robbers that called The Ex-Presidents. They commit bank robberies all wearing masks of Presidents Regan, Carter, Nixon and Johnson. Angelo Pappas believes they’re all surfers based upon security footage where one of bandits moons everyone. The tan lined ass cheeks are all Pappas has to go on until Johnny Utah shows up. Point Break’s Johnny has to go deep undercover and learn to surf in order to try prove the surfer gang theory. Utah, having no surfing experience, befriends Lori Petty’s character Tyler to help him learn how to surf. Of course Johnny falls for Tyler who is the former girl friend of Swayze’s character (Bodhi). Bodhi turns out to be the leader of The Ex-Presidents. But, what starts out as just an undercover operation turns out to be more complicated as Johnny Utah forms a bond with Bodhi and friends. There are several other notable actors in Point Break including John C. McGinley from Scrubs fame. And also appearances from Anthony Kiedis (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Tom Sizemore. All and all after watching this I was surprised how well this holds up. While there are a few things that may make the movie feel dated, for the most part this is still a good solid action movie. If you’re into Patrick Swayze check out our review of his 1989 hit Road House here. [https://moviemoshpit.com/2022/03/02/roadhouse/] Point Break (1991) Trailer Point Break IMDB page.
