The Other Side of Suffering

Have you ever had a moment that didn’t just interrupt your life, but shattered it? * A phone call. * A diagnosis. * A betrayal. * A flood that came too fast… * A prayer that didn’t get answered… * A person who didn’t come back. You were moving along - serving God, trusting Him, doing your best - and then, in an instant, something broke that you couldn’t put back together. And here’s the thing nobody tells you:You can survive what breaks you…and still not be okay. You can "move on," keep functioning, go back to work, raise the kids, serve in church - but secretly, deep down…something’s still stuck. Something inside of you hasn’t caught up. So you’re left asking: * Why did this happen? * Why didn’t God stop it? * And what am I supposed to do now? This thought is about that. We’re not going to try and make sense of everything God has allowed.Because some tragedies don’t make sense - and that’s the point. But what if you could find peace… strength… and clarity anyway? What if, even in the middle of not understanding, you could learn how to trust God again?Even if you’re still carrying disappointment.Even if part of you is numb.Even if you still flinch when someone says, "God has a plan." That’s why we’re here.Because there is a way through it.And there is something on the other side of suffering. Years ago, a man was trapped in a collapsed building. He was alive, but surrounded by rubble. Couldn't move. Couldn't see daylight. All he had was a voice on the other end of a rescue line telling him, "Hold on. We’re coming. Don’t stop breathing." He couldn’t see the rescuers. He couldn’t feel progress. But what saved him was that voice. The presence. The promise that someone was coming. This message is for the person who's still ‘under the rubble.’You’re alive. But something collapsed. You can’t move. You can’t make sense of it. And you’re just trying to keep breathing. We’re going to talk about what to do when life breaks, and you’re left trying to trust the voice you can’t see. I. ACKNOWLEDGING THE ACHE "Jesus wept." (John 11:35) He didn’t lecture. He didn’t quote a Psalm. He didn’t rush to perform the miracle. He stood before a grave and wept. Even though He knew the resurrection was coming, the pain was real. You don’t have to choose between believing in resurrection and acknowledging the ache. When a loved one dies, when your marriage falls apart, when tragedy hits, people often want to cheer you up too fast. But the Bible never asks you to pretend. You don’t have to explain your tears. You don’t have to apologize for them.God is not intimidated by your grief - He joins you in it. | "Then Job arose… and worshipped." (Job 1:20–22) Job lost everything. And worshipped. Not because he understood. But because he trusted the God he couldn’t explain. Grief is just love with nowhere to go.Job mourned and worshipped in the same breath. But let’s be honest: grief begs for answers. II. REJECTING EASY EXPLANATIONS "The secret things belong unto the Lord our God…" (Deuteronomy 29:29) There are some answers that belong to God - and God alone.Job’s friends showed up… and ruined everything with their words. They tried to explain what only Heaven could understand. If you’re grieving, be careful not to mistake silence for absence. If you’re supporting, be even more careful not to force theology into moments that simply require presence. | "How unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out!" (Rom 11:33) Don’t try to finish a sentence God hasn’t spoken.Sometimes presence is more powerful than preaching. Even when we don’t understand, God is not far away. III. GOD IS WITH US IN THE MIDDLE "When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee…" (Isaiah 43:2) Not if…when. You will pass through. But not alone. When floods come, they never knock politely.Loss doesn’t schedule an appointment. But God walks in with you - every single time. | "The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart." (Psalm 34:18) He doesn’t wait for you to feel strong. He comes near because you’re not. God doesn’t always calm the storm, but He walks with you through it.His presence is the promise, not protection from pain, but companionship through it. So what gives us hope in that kind of presence? The answer is found in eternity. IV. ETERNITY MAKES SENSE OF WHAT EARTH CANNOT "For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy…" (Romans 8:18) Paul called beatings, betrayals, and prison a “light affliction"—why?Because he saw through the lens of eternity. | "For our light affliction… worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory." (2 Corinthians 4:17–18) Hold a feather in one hand. A brick in the other.Feel the difference? That’s the comparison between now …and forever. | "He hath made everything beautiful in His time… also he hath set the world [eternity] in their heart…" (Ecclesiastes 3:11) That ache in your chest? That longing for justice? That need for answers? That’s eternity calling. You were made for forever. This life isn’t the last chapter. It’s the introduction. Some things won’t be made right until forever—and that’s why we must live for forever. But until then, we live in tension. So what does faith look like when you still don’t understand? V. FAITH DOESN’T MEAN FULL UNDERSTANDING "For now we see through a glass, darkly…" (1 Corinthians 13:12) Ancient mirrors were bronze, blurry, warped. That’s how we see things now.But then - face to face. Sometimes God doesn’t give you clarity; He gives you peace that passes understanding. | "These all died in faith, not having received the promises…" (Hebrews 11:13) Faith is not proof. Faith is trust in advance. You don’t have to know why - you just have to know Who. God’s silence is not His absence. His mystery is not His mistake. So what now? How do we live between what we feel and what we know? VI. LIVING IN THE LIGHT OF ETERNITY "Blessed are those who mourn: for they shall be comforted." (Matthew 5:4) Tragedy changes your vision. It shows you what matters.Let it do its work. You don’t come out of a hurricane rearranging your closet. You come out asking: What do I really need to carry? Let pain reorder your priorities.Let eternity reframe your values. When the present hurts, look to the future. The long view of eternity doesn’t erase pain - it puts it in its place. Here’s the challenge: * Don’t wait to understand - respond to grace. * Don’t let what broke you keep you from trusting the One who can restore you. * Don’t let temporary pain cost you eternal peace. SUMMARY Some tragedies don’t make sense. And that’s the point. But we learned: * It’s okay to hurt. God doesn’t ask you to pretend. * You don’t have to explain it all. * God is with you in the middle. * Eternity puts pain in perspective. * Faith rests in mystery. * You can live again, even in the ache. God may not give you closure, but He will give you Himself. And that’s greater than the answer.Don’t waste your pain. Let it point you toward what’s eternal. CONCLUSION This thought wasn’t just about suffering. It was about what’s on the other side of it. And that “other side” isn’t just healing. It’s Him. Not better circumstances. Not everything tied up with a bow.But Jesus—present, loving, and still worthy of your trust. When you can't trace God's hand… trust His heart. When your prayers seem unanswered… trust His presence. When your heart feels numb… trust His promise. Today is not the end of your story. This chapter is painful, yes. But it is not permanent. The story doesn’t end in the dark. And when you get to the other side - face to face with Jesus - you’ll finally see clearly. This life will not make full sense until we stand in front of the One who wrote it. Will you trust Him… even if you still don’t understand? Will you give Him what’s still hurting? Will you let Him walk you through the valley, to the other side? 1 Corinthians 13:12, again because it says it so well:"Now we see through a glass, darkly… but then face to face." We’re not promised full understanding here. But we are promised full presence. And on the other side of suffering, there is Jesus. Prayer: Lord, I don’t need to understand - I just need You.I give You the pain I’ve been carrying.I give You the questions I stopped asking.I give You the part of me that still flinches when I hear the word ‘hope.’I trust You again. Not because I understand. But because You’re still God. And when we finally see Him face to face… everything will make sense. This is a public episode.
