Staying Rooted through Music with Tamara Menon

Tamara has spent her life challenging the colonial view of music making, performance, and education. Tamara’s pedagogy revolves around the avant garde, where there is no right or wrong when it comes to music. Tamara came to the Region of Waterloo as an international student strongly influenced by her Indian roots and her fierce spirit for social advocacy. Listen in as we talk about her journey creating the Yuva Arts Project, bringing youth to Canada from the “red light district” of Mumbai for a 2-week arts exchange. The experience was transformative for the participants but also for Tamara herself. We wrap up the show and this series with practical ways that people can support the arts locally. Malleability isn’t just about Clay with Mengchao Wu

Mengchao comes to the Region of Waterloo as a transplant from the United States. Winding her way from Wall Street to Canada had her re-evaluate what is important in life. Mengchao decided to launch Wu Ceremics full-time in 2020 and clay became a lifesaver for her during the pandemic. Her work connects themes of Chinese identity, immigration, and human relationships. Mengchao’s pedagogy revolves around showing people that everyone can be an artist and welcoming everyone to explore the wheel. The Artistic Balance of Motherhood and Cultural Identity with Kate McHugh Kamo

Kate dives deep into her recent production, 20 Grains of Rice, a performance which explores themes of Japanese Canadian identity. The story starts as Kate finds herself as part of one of three non-white families growing up in Elmira and follows a journey of struggle to maintain culture in a different country. The process involved uncovering hushed stories of intergenerational trauma and injustices. Later in the conversation, Kate explores the challenges faced by women balancing work-life balance as both mothers and artists, highlighting a need for a cultural shift in the arts towards boundaries and flexibility to allow for inclusivity.  Links: Follow Kate on Instagram - @kate.k.mch Info on Dreamwalker Dance - www.dreamwalkerdance.com [https://www.dreamwalkerdance.com/] Info on Balancing Act - www.balancingactcanada.com [https://balancingactcanada.com/en/] Are you a woman around the Region of Waterloo who would like a venue to scream?
