Empty Nest Solo Mom: Embracing Change

In this episode, I share my reflections on the bittersweetness of becoming an empty nest solo mom. After managing everything alone for years, our newfound freedom can feel both liberating and unnerving. I talk about packing up decades of memories, embracing solo travel, and learning to let go of my need to keep tabs on my grown children. As I embrace this new chapter — becoming a grandma, writing, and trusting God for provision and direction — I trust that you will come alongside and find support in each other. So, if you're adjusting to life after your kids leave home or even if they are still living at home, this episode is for you. Follow me for ongoing stories and resources as we navigate the empty nest together. Thanks. Who is loving you this Valentine’s Day? How Solo Moms Can Thrive in the Empty Nest Years

Mothering solo involves many challenges. You juggle everything—from raising your children to managing your own well-being. But as your kids grow older and become independent, you will find yourself in a new phase of life: the empty nest. What happens when your primary focus shifts, and suddenly, the house is quiet? How do you find purpose and fulfillment in this new chapter? I’m J. Rosemarie Francis and I know this transition all too well. After raising my children solo, it was time to face the empty nest — alone. While on a four-month vacation, my youngest son left home. Despite thinking I was prepared, the reality of my empty nest hit me hard. The quiet, the separation, the shift in purpose—it was unnerving. One surprising moment of clarity came when I felt guilty buying a simple plum during my vacation. I discovered later on that the guilty feeling stemmed from a deeper issue: I didn't feel I deserved to be happy outside my role as a mother. It was a wake-up call that forced me to confront how much of my identity was tied to being a mom. For solo moms especially, this transition can feel even more isolating without a partner to navigate this change alongside. But it doesn’t have to be a time of loss. Instead, it can be a time of growth, discovery, and renewal. Here’s how to prepare your mind and embrace this new phase: * Develop a New Focus: Find purpose outside of motherhood. Whether pursuing a hobby or goals or fulfilling a dream (like my love for travel), having something to look forward to can bring you joy and fulfillment. * Recognize Your New Role: You’re no longer the caregiver but a mentor and confidant for your adult children. Be their sounding board, ask questions, and help them think through challenges without stepping in to fix everything. It’s a beautiful way to stay connected without interfering. * Invest in Yourself: Use this time to strengthen yourself physically, mentally, and spiritually. This not only enriches your life but also sets an example for your children. This is a way to show them that life continues beyond raising a family, and that purpose and happiness are lifelong pursuits. Remember, while your role as a mom has changed, your ability to support, mentor, and inspire hasn’t. Celebrate this transition as an opportunity to grow and thrive in new ways. And don’t forget to connect with others who understand your journey. For example, join the Solo Moms Connect community to share wisdom, offer support, and mentor moms who are where you once were. So embrace the next chapter, solo moms. Your story is far from over—it’s just beginning. Join the conversation today: Solo Moms Connect. This is a public episode.
