Cultural Hegemony: The Problem of the 21st Century

Change the Culture – Change the World!!! In the beginning of the 20th century, W.E.B. Dubois, the great historian, educator, co-founder of the NAACP and 1st African American graduate from Harvard University, stated "the problem of the 20th century is the problem of the color line", as a reference to race relations at the turn of the century.  Over a hundred years since he made the statement, with the exception of the second Civil Rights era (1960's -1980), which was approximately 100 after the first Civil Rights era (1860's -1880), the problem of the color line (racism) is still a significant problem in American culture.  In fact, 50 years after the original Kern Commission Report of 1968 determined institutional and systemic racism were responsible for many of the ills that beset black America, a new study that builds on the Kerner Report's work conducted in 2018 found in many statistical area,  i.e., income inequality, criminal justice & education, conditions for African Americans are worst.  This is because you can't legislate over 500 years of beliefs, values, customs and tradition, (in a word, culture) out of the psyche of the dominant (hegemonic) group.  That 500 years of cultural conditioning began with the Doctrine of Discover, a Papal decree that declared any non-Christian inhabitant encountered in new lands were savages or inferior to the Christian Europe.  Consequently, they had the blessings of the Church/Pope to enslave and/or kill them and take possession of their land, treasure and resources.  This dehumanizing legacy is still with us in the form of gentrification in urban cities in the U.S. and regime change abroad.  What's worst is many African Americans embrace the European values the are the root cause of the Atlantic Slave Trade and genocide of indigenous population that threatens the planet and life on earth as we know it; unrestricted, unregulated, consumer capitalism.  This is why the problem of the 21st century is Cultural Hegemony.  Winston Churchill gave a clue in 1945 what the intent of the ruling class was when stated he interested in "Empires of the Mind".  The ruling class and many of their cultural conditioned descendants have legally, psychologically and emotional moved on from problem of the color line/racism.  The Robber Barons of 21st century, tech giants like Amazon, Google & Facebook have are making Churchill's "Empires of the Mind" a reality in the form of Surveillance Capitalism.  They make Carnegie, Rockefeller & JP Morgan Chase look like low level drug dealers.  They have circumvented our right to privacy, with our consent, and sell our unexpressed desires to the highest bidder while we, poor, working poor & middle class divide ourselves by all the isms of identity politics that are by products of European culture.  This will not change until the 99% recognize that we are in a war and share a common enemy, the 1%.  Nothing short of a revolution of values, a change of the narrative by the masses that focuses on Cultural Hegemony and a 2nd American (Cultural) Revolution, will change our fate.

COVID-19 - A New Beginning: A Time For Truth & Cultural Conciliation

This is my 1st Pod Cast in a series on educating and organizing the middle and working class to make America Great. The intent is to take advantage of this unprecedented, equality, freedom and opportunity, afforded us by the COVID-19 pandemic, from the hegemonic American empire, to recreate a New America, based on the world view of a collective, connected, poor, working, middle class majority. It is inspired by the “Radical Revolution of Values”, called for by Dr. King in a 1967 speech. It lays the foundation for the long overdue 2nd American Revolution for Independence. Independence from the violent, unjust and unprincipled European cultural values, beliefs and way of life, that is the worst, ongoing, pathological viral pandemic, that has affected the world, for the last 500 years. It began with the Doctrine of Discovery, which is responsible for more deaths, in the form of genocide of indigenous people, the Atlantic Slave Trade (human trafficking), Drug Trafficking, two world wars, use of two atomic weapons, countless of protracted (past and ongoing) undeclared wars/conflicts and crimes against humanity, than all of the pandemics in history combined.  This insatiable drive for wealth, power and control of the Earth's resources spawned by, a feudalistic, medieval, world view of 15th century Europe, threatens the existence of the planet and all species that live on it. The global crisis that is the COVID-19 Pandemic, has exposed all of the Neo-Liberal rhetoric and propaganda of the current, unsustainable, political and cultural economy, that put profit before people, politics before policies and power before principle. It has also, if even for this moment in time, made most of us understand that we are all totally dependent and connected to the planet and each other. It is the last opportunity given to the human species by a higher power, call it God, The Universe, Karma, or just dumb luck, for the majority of humanity, to raise up and save ourselves and the planet from the source and axis of evil in the form of European Culture. This is not a condemnation of the people. It is condemnation and identification of the minority, pass and present, who initiated and promulgate the current dominant systems, of beliefs, value, traditions, customs and ideas that threaten life as we know it. Before we can move forward, we must all publicly acknowledge our shared, interdependent, common purpose, survival of the planet and all in it, in a just, fair and sustainable environment. This will be accomplished by acknowledging publicly and teaching the truth about our shared common history. That is only half of the process. A period will be required for lamentation and repentance for those that directly or indirectly enabled, supported and benefited from the Hegemonic Empire, either through creation and implementation of the policies, or approval of them. Simultaneously, those negatively impacted by the Empire, for half a millennium, must resolve to forgive the transgressions of their oppressors, and focus on developing themselves, as they work together with the former, to build this new world together. Both groups shall make a commitment, to annually acknowledge and commemorate their common history, to ensure that the mistakes of the past, are never forgotten, or repeated.
