Acerca de The Black Massage Therapist

The Black Massage Therapist is a podcast exploring restorative and therapeutic wellness through the lived experience of a working massage therapist. Hosted by Pauline Blackwood, the show offers thoughtful reflections from the treatment room, where everyday people arrive carrying stress, recovery journeys, life transitions, and the need for genuine rest. Each episode invites listeners to understand massage not as luxury, but as meaningful care that supports both body and mind. Drawing on years of hands-on practice, Pauline shares insights into touch, recovery, boundaries, resilience, and the quiet power of slowing down. Conversations move beyond techniques to explore what well-being looks like in real life — especially for those whose stories and experiences are often overlooked within traditional wellness spaces. The podcast blends professional knowledge with warmth, honesty, and cultural awareness. From treatment room moments to retreat settings and wellness events, The Black Massage Therapist creates a calm listening space for anyone seeking grounded self-care. Whether you are curious about massage, navigating change, or simply learning how to rest more deeply, this podcast offers gentle guidance, practical wisdom, and permission to pause.

What Desk Work Does to Breathing and Hips

Many of us spend more time sitting than any generation before us. Long hours at desks, working from home, commuting, and scrolling our phones can leave us with tight hips, shallow breathing, stiff backs and aching shoulders. In this episode of The Black Massage Therapist, I explore how modern life has changed the way we move compared with our ancestors 150 years ago, why our bodies often feel tired despite doing less physical work, and simple ways to interrupt the cycle. You'll discover: * Why sitting changes the way we breathe. * The surprising connection between tight hips and stress. * Why standing up isn't enough. * Easy movement snacks you can do throughout the day. * How massage and mindful movement can help restore balance. Whether you work in Canary Wharf, from home, or spend hours caring for others, this episode offers practical ideas to help you move and feel better. This thoughtful and relatable conversation offers insight into the therapist-client relationship, professional boundaries, wellness culture, and the realities of massage therapy practice. Topics include: • Massage therapy and the common cold • Pregnancy massage and safety • Pain, injuries and body awareness • Stress and emotional wellbeing • Client communication and informed consent • Holistic wellness and self-care Perfect for massage clients, wellness enthusiasts, complementary therapists, and anyone interested in bodywork, holistic health, and therapeutic care. 🎙️ Hosted by Pauline Blackwood of Pendulum Massage, London. #MassageTherapy #ComplementaryTherapy #WellnessPodcast #PregnancyMassage #HolisticHealth #SelfCare #BlackWellness #MassagePodcast #LondonMassage

How Stress Shows Up in the Body

How Stress Shows Up in the Body Stress doesn’t just sit in the mind — it lives in the body. In this episode, I explore how stress can show up physically as tight shoulders, shallow breathing, fatigue, and that familiar “wired but tired” feeling. We look at the idea of weathering — how ongoing life stress, especially in busy environments like London, can build up over time and begin to affect how we feel, move, and even age. This isn’t about blame or quick fixes — it’s about understanding what the body has been carrying, often quietly, for years. I also share how creating small, regular pauses — including massage and supportive community spaces — can help the body soften, reset, and recover. -------------------------------------------------------------- REF: For those looking for gentle ways to reconnect with themselves, spaces like Black Girls Hike UK [https://www.instagram.com/bgh_uk]offer opportunities for movement, nature, and collective well-being alongside other forms of care. Why People Fall Asleep During Massage

Why People Fall Asleep During Massage Have you ever drifted off during a massage and wondered why it happens? In this episode, Pauline from Pendulum Massage explores the science behind one of the most common experiences on the massage table — falling asleep. Massage therapy can encourage the body to shift from the sympathetic nervous system (the “fight or flight” stress response) into the parasympathetic nervous system, sometimes called the body’s rest-and-digest mode. When this shift occurs, heart rate slows, breathing deepens, and muscles begin to release tension. Research from Tiffany Field at the Touch Research Institute has shown that massage therapy can reduce the stress hormone cortisol while increasing serotonin and dopamine — neurotransmitters associated with relaxation and well-being. Because serotonin is involved in regulating sleep cycles, this change in body chemistry may help explain why many people naturally drift into sleep during treatment. In this episode, Pauline explains what is happening in the body and why falling asleep during massage is often a sign that the nervous system has finally switched into recovery mode. What Happens in the First 10 Minutes of a Massage? | The Black Massage Therapist

In this episode of The Black Massage Therapist, Pauline Blackwood takes listeners inside the first ten minutes of a massage session — a part of the experience many people are curious about but rarely hear explained. From the moment a client arrives, Pauline describes how the space, the conversation, and the consultation help create a sense of safety and calm. These early moments are not rushed; they are where the therapeutic relationship begins and where the body often starts to soften even before the massage starts. Pauline explains how a thoughtful consultation helps build trust, understand what the body needs, and shape the treatment that follows. She shares how listening carefully, explaining the process, and giving clients time to settle all contribute to a more restorative experience. The episode also explores how the nervous system responds in those first few minutes — when breathing slows, shoulders release, and the body begins to recognise it can finally rest. If you live locally and have been thinking about trying massage, this episode may help you feel more confident about what to expect. Pauline offers restorative and therapeutic massage from her treatment room, where sessions are designed to support relaxation, recovery, and wellbeing.
