Ftaiwo: Culinary Art, Mental Health and High School allegations

For our maiden episode, we sit down with Funmilade Taiwo (Ftaiwo) a talented chef, product designer and mental health advocate in Toronto.  He shares his personal struggles with anxiety, stage fright, and disordered eating, emphasizing the importance of therapy, community support, and cultural practices in coping with mental health issues. His love for cooking, influenced by his father and seen as both a therapeutic activity and a cultural connection, plays a vital role in his healing journey.  We also discuss his unwavering Nigerian identity, despite living abroad. He reflects on how immigration has shaped but not diminished his cultural roots, and he gives us a unique perspective on maintaining one's heritage in a foreign land. A significant part of the interview is dedicated to mental health advocacy. With a background in psychology and experience working with autistic children in Nigeria, we talk about the important need for accessible mental health resources which led him to create a directory for therapists in Nigeria, despite his initial career path. This interview beautifully intertwines themes of identity, creativity, passion and mental health with lots of laughs.
