Chris Bright is an international Futsal player and patient advocate for those with type 1 diabetes. He founded The Diabetes Football Community (TDFC), an award-winning peer support project that aims to educate, inspire and advise people with diabetes who are passionate about football. Chris coaches the UK's first all Type 1 Diabetes Futsal squad in the European Futsal Championship for people with Diabetes (DiaEuro). Chris works for JDRF as a Community Partnerships and Events Lead. Chris is also an Honorary Fellow at the University of Worcester, awarded for his work around diabetes in physical activity and sports. This podcast - takes a deep dive into Chris's football and futsal career, how and why he started TDFC, his mindset about his diabetes and unconscious bias of others, as well as his thoughts on the benefits of peer support for him and his type 1 diabetes journey. Gavin has completed many extreme endurance challenges such as running 30 marathons in 30 days from John O’Groats to Land’s End, motivated through living with type 1 diabetes. Having once kept a blog called ‘Diathlete’ it has now transitioned into a charity. Paula is a dietitian and diabetes educator from Costa Rica, currently working in the NHS as a Paediatric Diabetes Dietitian and a trustee of Diathlete Charity. She has been living with T1 diabetes since the age of 4. Sports-wise, Paula has experience in dance, martial arts, rowing, and much more. Kurtis Kenningley is a driven trainee solicitor based in Leeds and London working in the finance division of an international law firm. He has been a type 1 diabetic for over a decade and has learned a lot along the way. He has volunteered with Diabetes UK for around 5 years which has been immensely beneficial for his own knowledge and his understanding of his condition, as well as opening doors for him to meet new people and get involved in different exciting projects and initiatives. #002: Sports and Exercise Advice for People with Type 1 Diabetes from Dr Rob Andrews

In this episode, Molly chats to Dr Rob Andrews - Rob is an Associate Professor of Diabetes at the University of Exeter and an Honorary Consultant Physician at Musgrove Park Hospital Taunton. He is one of the co-founders of EXTOD, a  group that aims to provide evidence-based support for people with type 1 diabetes to  undertake safe and effective exercise, and to enjoy its associated health benefits. Rob talks about what happens when you exercise and have type 1 diabetes, advice on how to exercise safely, challenges for coaches and athletes wanting to exercise and tips for how to manage diabetes when exercising. At the University he leads a group that researches how to encourage and support patients  with diabetes to exercise. Past studies include; The Early ACTID study that look at the effect  of diet and exercise in newly diagnosed people with Type 2 diabetes; EXTOD education a  study that developed and tested an education programme for people with Type 1 diabetes  (with accompanying training for health care professionals to deliver this programme) to  guide insulin and carbohydrate adjustment for safe exercise; and EXTOD 101 a study that  determined the “real world” risks and benefits of exercise in 101 adults with type 1 diabetes  who are training for and running a Half Marathon Ongoing studies include; EXTOD education online a study that adapts the EXTOD education  programme to an online programme; MOTIVATE T2D that aims to determine how to  remotely increase and maintain exercise in people with newly diagnosed Type 2 diabetes;  EXTOD adolescents a study that aims to develop an education programme to help  encourage and support exercise in adolescents with Type 1 diabetes; and studies that aim  to determine the best ways to remotely support adults and children with Type 1 diabetes to  increase their everyday physical activity.  At Musgrove park hospital as well as doing regular Diabetes and obesity clinics he runs  specialist adult, adolescent and paediatric sports clinics to give advice to sports men,  women and children who have Type 1 diabetes.
