Episode The Gateways Club Cover

The Gateways Club

In 1930's bohemian Chelsea, the 20th century's longest running lesbian bar was established. As its name alludes to, the Gateways Club was a gateway to a world in which lesbian and bisexual women could embrace and explore their identities in safety. Documented in Into The Cellar and The Killing of Sister George, the Gateways Club's murals and smoke-filled interior was a home to lesbians and bisexual women until its closure in 1985, and particularly during World War Two. Join Glaswegian singer-songwriter Lynnie Carson and Brewgooder's LGBT+ Inclusion Advisor Drew McCusker as they discuss lesbian history as part of LGBT+ history, the meaning of the Gateways Club, and how knowing our history can help us as allies in supporting our trans loved ones.
