Episode Heritage, Reinvention, & Adaptability - with Tanapol Cover

Heritage, Reinvention, & Adaptability - with Tanapol

On today’s episode I speak to Tanapol. Tanapol discusses his family’s deep entrepreneurial roots and the dramatic transformation of their long-standing business. Tanapol currently runs Amco House in Bangkok. This venue, which includes a garden, hosts events, functions, meetings, and weddings. The location has a heritage spanning 30 to 40 years. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company made an almost 180-degree pivot. It transitioned from operating as a consultancy company—which served various overseas firms, including South African companies, doing business in Thailand—to becoming an events venue. The name Amco is a shortening of Annex Motors Company, a name given by Tanapol's father. Tanapol also shares the history of Annex Motors, the family company started by his father. His father was notable for being the first person in Thailand to actually build a car, the Hasten. Annex Motors has significant historical ties to South Africa; they previously had a contract and worked with the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSR) in Pretoria and the Royal Thai Air Force on a data link project involving Gripen aircraft. Additionally, Tanapol was once the biggest importer of a specific Chardonnay varietal into Thailand, supplying between 10,000 to 20,000 bottles a year to Bangkok Airways for their international flights until COVID-19. The family business (now operated by his brother) continues to import remote control gates and swimming pool products, some of which maintain a South African connection. Drawing on his personal journey—which included studying engineering at the University of Sydney, Australia—Tanapol reflects on how moving to Australia at age 11 helped broaden his worldview, develop his social abilities, and connect with people. He stresses that a crucial business lesson is the ability to evolve, change, and adapt quickly. However, he cautions that quick adaptation must be balanced with realism. Drawing on his experience helping to set up the PPTV TV station, he advises against reckless spending and prioritizing focus, citing the success of Channel 7. His main advice for anyone starting a new business is to be a good listener and maintain strong situational awareness. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Find Out More About Tanapol’s Ventures: Amcore House (Main Venue Business): Facebook [https://www.facebook.com/amcohouse1] Instagram [https://www.instagram.com/amco_house/?fbclid=IwY2xjawORHWtleHRuA2FlbQIxMABicmlkETFMaEp5aWp3Z3lDdXlLMUVic3J0YwZhcHBfaWQQMjIyMDM5MTc4ODIwMDg5MgABHo43H2mmRDUoNA3sk1yJ8K6PfYtsS2DlUfYG-HHVf3bjdN9tZugP3noYUI8S_aem_gHlV3lPQqYWzSNiRz6_syw] Comeback Car (YouTube Channel - Car discussions, currently in Thai): Youtube [https://www.youtube.com/@comebackcar] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thank you for joining in on today’s conversation on The Business Talk. Episode Solving Inefficiencies with Augos Cover

Solving Inefficiencies with Augos

In this particular episode, Kyle speaks with Tim Stevens, the co-founder and CEO of AUGOS. AUGOS is a company dedicated to transformingraw data into actionable insights. Tim, a self-described serialentrepreneur and problem solver, explains that AUGOS leverages technologyto solve everyday business problems in a pragmatic way. AUGOS's journey began in 2007 as "power guys"during South Africa's blackouts and load shedding, initially by importinggenerators. They quickly realised the critical need for data to correctly sizethese generators for large corporates. This insight was the genesis moment forAUGOS (then Powerstar), as they recognised that business leaders requiredbetter data to manage their key resources. The company has since evolvedfrom real-time electricity measurement to monitoring other resources, environmental factors, and, most excitingly, measuring manufacturingeffectiveness, labour, and capital. A core focus for AUGOS is identifying and solvinginefficiencies, which they view as significant opportunities for businessesto achieve gains, akin to eliminating waste. They pride themselves on beingpragmatic, emphasizing that data is merely a means to an end; the truebusiness is solving problems and driving transformation. AUGOS helps companies make "micro adjustments" to their operations orbusiness models, recognizing that constant change necessitates regular tuningto prevent performance degradation. This includes optimizing aspects liketariff regimes, which can lead to millions in savings through simpleadministrative changes. They also note that sometimes, businesses are too closeto their problems and a fresh data point or outside perspective can revealobvious opportunities. AUGOS is also leveraging smart technologies like AIto enhance their offerings. Instead of packaging answers or pre-framingreports, AI allows customers with access to the data repository to ask anyquestion they like and frame the data in any way they choose. This isparticularly powerful in manufacturing, where relationships between energy, compressed air, and productive output can be explored to determine unit costsand easily identify opportunities. Beyond South Africa, where they serve numerous Fortune500 companies like PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, and Unilever, as well as leadingSouth African brands, AUGOS has expanded into Africa and the Middle East, including a long-standing customer relationship with the Sevenstar Burj Al Arabin Dubai. The company is now actively expanding into Thailand, seekingpartners to apply their IP and experience in this new market. Tim highlightsthat Thailand's manufacturing sector is substantially larger than SouthAfrica's and presents a very strong market, noting that few companies can matchAUGOS's capabilities, particularly in manufacturing data insights. One key lesson Tim shares for aspiring entrepreneurs is to pickyour objective and stay true to it, pushing through challenges with beliefand passion, even when it feels like a lonely journey.
