Job's Three Friends

In this sermon, Pastor Chad looks at the way Job's three visiting friends unhelpfully interact with Job in the midst of his suffering. He then draw out ways that we can learn to better minister to those who suffer.

Ministry to the Suffering

In the second sermon on the Book of Job, Pastor Chad uses Job 2:11–13 to show how Job’s three friends initially model a godly way of responding to suffering through costly presence, shared grief, and seven days of silent companionship. He calls the church to move toward those who suffer, meet them with compassionate presence rather than quick answers, and practice humble, non‑anxious companionship that reflects Christ’s own willingness to weep with those who weep.

Why Do Good People Suffer?

Pastor Chad introduces a new series in Job and wrestles with the question, “Why do good people suffer?” He explains that Job is presented as uniquely righteous so we know his suffering is not caused by secret sin, but is allowed by God to reveal real faith that trusts Him even when blessings are stripped away. The call for believers is to respond to trials like Job—honestly lamenting, yet continuing to trust and worship God—knowing that, as James 5 says, the Lord is ultimately compassionate and merciful.

Why Is Christianity Exclusive?

Pastor Chad argues that Christianity is necessarily exclusive because Jesus himself—and his apostles after him—clearly claimed he is the only way to God, a claim validated if the resurrection is historically true. He explains that truth by nature excludes what contradicts it, so different religions cannot all be equally true about how we are reconciled to God, even though the one narrow way in Christ is freely offered to everyone. He then urges believers to boldly and lovingly share this exclusive gospel, centering conversations on the risen Jesus rather than themselves, embodying the message through genuine love, and letting communion remind them both of the cost of salvation and of those who still need to hear.
