Mehr Fabric of Folklore

Folktales can be strange, mystical, macabre and intriguing. Join us as we explore the stories, culture and people behind the folklore. We go beyond retelling the legends, myths and fairy tales of old. We look at the story behind the lore, behind the songs and traditions to understand more about what they mean, and their importance. These stories, many originating as oral histories, inform us of what it means to be human; what it means to be an integral part of this Earth. Stories of magic and wonder bind us. They connect us through invisible strands, like the gossamer fibers of a spiders web. Folktales have the power to demonstrate how, although we live in drastically different locals, our hearts and minds beat as one human race. We are weaving the fabrics of our past and present stories, to help us better understand ourselves and to awaken us to a more compassionate and caring world community. As we explore the meaning of existence through folklore we hope to inspire future generations to lead with love and understanding.

Episode Frau (Mother) Holle: A German Fairy Tale Cover

Frau (Mother) Holle: A German Fairy Tale

Frau Holle (Mother Holle) What if the portal to your transformation wasn't a doorway or a wardrobe — but a well? In this Brothers Grimm classic collected in 1812, a hardworking stepdaughter drops her spindle into a well and jumps in after it, landing in a magical underworld ruled by Frau Holle — a mysterious, ancient figure who makes snow fall on earth every time she shakes out her featherbed. The girl serves       with genuine care rather than obligation. When homesickness calls her back, Frau Holle rewards her with a shower of gold. Her lazy stepsister, chasing the same reward without the same heart, returns home drenched in pitch instead. It's the same ancient question The Talking Eggs asks in the Louisiana bayou — and Diamonds and Toads asks in France, and Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters asks in Zimbabwe: does your character hold up when no one from home is watching? This story belongs to the same tale-type family, and in the Fairy Tale Flip episode on The Talking Eggs, we explore exactly why this pattern keeps showing up across centuries and continents. Head there to see how all these threads connect. Fairy Tale Flip Ep 24: Talking Eggs

Talking eggs. A mysterious old woman in the woods. Two sisters. One choice. This Creole folktale from the American South has been hiding in plain sight — and it has a lot to say. This episode dives deep into that tension through one of the most richly layered folktales from the American South — The Talking Eggs. Blanche and Rose are two sisters whose choices take them down very different paths. One finds treasure. The other finds danger. But this story is so much more than a simple moral tale — it's a window into Louisiana's Creole heritage, African spirituality, the complexity of family dynamics, and the societal expectations women have navigated for generations. In this episode we explore: The cultural roots that make this story uniquely powerful How African symbolism and Creole tradition are woven into every layer of the narrative What the tale's villains reveal about the societies that created them The role of thresholds and transformation in folklore — and what they mean for our own lives Whether you're a longtime lover of folklore or just discovering the world of fairy tales and folktales, this episode will change the way you see the stories you grew up with. 🎧 Listen to the full episode and share it with someone who needs to be reminded that kindness is never wasted. #FairyTales #Folklore #TalkingEggs #CulturalStorytelling #FabricOfFolklore #CreoleCulture #FairyTaleFlip #Storytelling #FolkloreForWomen 00:00 Introduction to Fairy Tales and Folktales 01:55 The Talking Eggs: Summary and Themes 07:10 Cultural Context: Louisiana's Rich Heritage 11:59 The Role of Women in the Tale 17:07 Comparative Analysis: Folktale Types and Influences 24:14 African Spirituality and Symbolism in the Story 27:33 The Power of Respect and Transformation 32:58 Cultural Layers: Creole and African Traditions 39:08 The Role of the Villain and Societal Mirrors 49:12 Thresholds of Transformation in Fairy Tales Follow us: Fabric of Folklore website [http://www.fabricoffolklore.com/] Youtube channel [https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCPtYGHjSLxYMUB173yzSFoA] Instagram  [https://www.instagram.com/fabric_of_folklore/?igshid=ZDdkNTZiNTM%3D] Linkedin [https://www.linkedin.com/in/vanessa-rogers-tickleddragonforge/]

Episode Talking Eggs: Louisiana Folktale - Storytelling Cover

Talking Eggs: Louisiana Folktale - Storytelling

Deep in the Louisiana bayou, a kind-hearted girl named Blanche is overlooked, overworked, and underestimated — until a chance encounter with a mysterious old woman in the woods changes everything. The Talking Eggs, retold by Robert D. San Souci with stunning illustrations by Jerry Pinkney, is a Caldecott Honor–winning adaptation of a Creole folktale full of wonder, magic, and moral consequence. Two-headed cows, square-dancing rabbits, and eggs that speak their own instructions — this is Southern folklore at its most vivid and alive. But underneath all the magic is a timeless truth: goodness is its own reward, and greed never gets what it expects. This story is the heart of the Fairy Tale Flip episode 23 — the anchor folktale that connects to tales told across France, Africa, and beyond. If you're ready to go deeper, that episode is your next stop. Episode Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters: An African Tale Cover

Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters: An African Tale

Set against the breathtaking landscape of ancient Zimbabwe, Mufaro's Beautiful Daughters is a luminous retelling of one of the world's most beloved folktale patterns — the story of two sisters, one kind and one cruel, and a king in disguise who sees who they truly are. Nyasha's mercy and humility lift her to greatness, while her sister Manyara's ambition and selfishness lead her exactly where she feared most. It's a story that reminds us our character is always on display, even when we think no one is looking. This gorgeous tale is beautifully connected to the same tale-type explored in the Fairy Tale Flip episode on The Talking Eggs — a Creole folktale from the American South. Watch/Listen that episode to see how the same wisdom about inner worth has echoed across continents and cultures for centuries. Episode Diamonds and Toads Fairy Tale: Storytelling Cover

Diamonds and Toads Fairy Tale: Storytelling

What happens when kindness is the currency that changes everything? Diamonds and Toads is a classic French fairy tale by Charles Perrault about two sisters whose words literally reveal their character — one speaks gems and flowers, the other toads and snakes. At its heart, this tale asks: what do we put out into the world, and what do we receive in return? It's a story about the magic that lives inside how we treat others — even strangers, even when no one is watching. This story shares deep roots with the Creole folktale The Talking Eggs — and if you haven't seen/heard the Fairy Tale Flip episode exploring that connection, head there next. You'll see exactly how this same tale-type has traveled across cultures, taking on new voices and new life everywhere it lands.
