Episode 5. Nutrition for Master Athletes with Dr Olly Witard Cover

5. Nutrition for Master Athletes with Dr Olly Witard

In this episode of FastFuel our host Dr James Morehen [https://www.getpro.co.uk/getproprofessional/our-expert-authors/james-morehen.html] is joined by leading academic Dr Olly Witard from Kings College London, as he discusses the nuances of nutrition in masters age athletes, and how they might differ from those of younger athletes.  Olly is a Senior Lecturer in Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism at King’s College London. His academic research interests are in the response of muscle protein metabolism to exercise and nutrition with application to athletic and clinical populations. Key learnings This podcast’s key learnings are: * As we age, we require a higher dose of protein to maximally stimulate the muscle response to protein due to anabolic resistance. * From a metabolic standpoint, loss of muscle mass begins a lot earlier in life than we originally thought, therefore early intervention is key to help prevent this decline.  * We can help to mitigate age-related loss of muscle mass by ensuring we continue lifestyle activities throughout the lifespan e.g physical activity. * For master athletes, increased protein requirements must be carefully balanced with other nutritional needs to ensure overall energy and nutrient needs are met.  With guest speaker Oliver Witard, Senior Lecturer in Exercise Metabolism and Nutrition, Kings College London [https://www.getpro.co.uk/getproprofessional/our-expert-authors/oliver-witard.html]. In this episode of FastFuel our host Dr James Morehen [https://www.getpro.co.uk/getproprofessional/our-expert-authors/james-morehen.html] is joined by Louise Sutton, Head of Sport and Exercise Nutrition at Leeds Beckett University, as she outlines the most important nutrition considerations for extreme athletic challenges. From practical considerations such as the ability to cook, to the importance of home comfort foods during long adventures, Louise delves into her decades of experiences working with athletes such as solo around-the-world sailors to Everest mountaineers.  Louise Sutton is the head of Sport and Exercise Nutrition at Leeds Beckett University. Her expertise focuses on optimising athletic performance and health through evidence-based nutrition strategies, and she has worked with athletes at all levels across a range of Olympic and professional sports. Louise takes a particular interest in supporting early career practitioners be effective in their roles. Key learnings This podcast’s key learnings are: * At a basic level, the two most common nutritional challenges during extreme events are meeting energy and fluid needs. * Whilst the energy costs during extreme challenges will be high, appetite can be challenged under certain conditions therefore food palability is a key factor to consider. * It's important to replicate event conditions and trial different foods and supplements during training to understand your athlete's preferences in extreme environments.   * Work with your athlete to co-create the event plan and give them additional confidence for the event.  With guest speaker Louise Sutton [https://www.getpro.co.uk/getproprofessional/our-expert-authors/louise-sutton.html], Head of Sports nutrition at Leeds Beckett University (BSc, MSc, SENr). Episode 4. Individualised Nutrition Support for Athletes with Mike Naylor Cover

4. Individualised Nutrition Support for Athletes with Mike Naylor

In this episode of Fast Fuel our host Dr James Morehen [https://www.getpro.co.uk/getproprofessional/our-expert-authors/james-morehen.html] is joined by Mike Naylor as he discusses his approach to working with athletes and delivering effective, personalised support to help them meet their goals. Mike is a leading health and performance nutritionist with over 15 years’ experience in elite sport, including having held roles such as the Head of Performance Nutrition at the English Institute of Sport. Key learnings This podcast's key learnings are: * Before diving into nutrition recommendations, start by understanding your athlete's nutritional habits, preferences and performance goals to tailor your recommendations. * Think about habit stacking. Identify opportunities within the athlete's daily routine and training schedule to integrate nutritional strategies and education.  * Tailor your approach to the environment. For example, a team environment might require more practical on-the-ground nutrition solutions compared to a 1.1 consultation.  * The more information you have the more you can tailor your support. Don't undersestimate the power of good listening and asking open questions to build rapport with your athlete. With guest speaker Mike Naylor [https://www.getpro.co.uk/getproprofessional/our-expert-authors/mike-naylor.html], Head of Nutrition for the English Institute of Sport (BSc, MSc, SENr). Episode 2. The Future of Protein Science with Dr Olly Witard Cover

2. The Future of Protein Science with Dr Olly Witard

In this episode of FastFuel our host Dr James Morehen [https://www.getpro.co.uk/getproprofessional/our-expert-authors/james-morehen.html] is joined by leading academic Dr Olly Witard from Kings College London, as he shares his own views on the future of protein science. From new functional peptides, exciting future research and the rise of alternative sources of Protein, Olly delves into his deep knowledge on this importance area of sports nutrition. Olly is a Senior Lecturer in Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism at King’s College London. His academic research interests are in the response of muscle protein metabolism to exercise and nutrition with application to athletic and clinical populations. Key learnings This podcast’s key learnings are: * Protein nutrition recommendations should combine health outcomes with the need for sustainable protein choices. * Future research should consider the effects of the whole food matrix and the muscle response to protein-rich foods within the context of a full meal. * Protein requirements and protein recommendations are two separate things. Protein requirements set out the minimum protein required to satisfy metabolic demand, whereas protein recommendations are for optimizing adaptation to training. * Current recommendations for protein nutrition can be broadly separated into 3 priniciples: Total, Type and Timing * From a sports nutrition perspective, elevated protein intakes need to be balanced against the other macronutrients that will be compromised.  With guest speaker Oliver Witard, Senior Lecturer in Exercise Metabolism and Nutrition, Kings College London [https://www.getpro.co.uk/getproprofessional/our-expert-authors/oliver-witard.html].
