* As Jacob goes on his way, the angels of God meet him.

Read Genesis 32:3-8 - 13:32
* The Scouting Report
* Jacob sends messengers ahead to Esau in the land of Seir.
* The Message: Humble and submissive ("Your servant Jacob").

* The Report: The messengers return with terrifying news—Esau is coming to meet Jacob with 400 men.

* He sends them in separate droves, telling each servant to say, "They belong to your servant Jacob; it is a present sent to my lord Esau."
* 6 sets of gifts coming at a staggered pace.

* Jacob sends his wives, servants, and eleven sons across the ford of Jabbok.

* The Man touches Jacob’s hip socket, putting it out of joint.

* The Man asks his name: "Jacob" (Heel-catcher/Supplanter).
* The New Name: Israel ("For you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed").
* God Prevails
* Jacob asks the Man's name, but the Man responds with a question and blesses him there.
* The Aftermath
* Jacob names the place Peniel ("For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved").
* Facing God or Face of God
* Note: Jacob limps because of his hip—this is why the people of Israel do not eat the sinew of the hip to this day.
