Episode Mental Health As Prevention Cover

Mental Health As Prevention

Forty percent of high school students report persistent sadness or hopelessness, and that word persistent should stop all of us in our tracks. We keep raising awareness about teen mental health, but the numbers don’t magically improve, so we want to talk about the next step: prevention skills that actually live inside a family’s day-to-day life. We start by defining mental health using the CDC framework: emotional, psychological, and social well-being that affects how we think, feel, relate to others, handle stress, and make decisions. Then we simplify it into four trainable areas you can practice at home: thinking, feeling, relating, and functioning. Along the way, we share protective factors backed by prevention science and programs like the Strengthening Families Program, including strong relationships, clear expectations, and knowing what’s going on in your kids’ lives. You’ll hear practical coaching language for “automatic negative thoughts” (ANTS), plus simple prompts to help kids problem-solve instead of spiraling. We also dig into emotional regulation as a skill that’s taught when things are calm and practiced when they’re not, with coping options that work in real settings like classrooms and friend groups. For connection, we talk “my time,” putting your phone down when your kid wants to talk, and helping them identify trusted adults beyond you. Finally, we unpack resilience and functioning: how to help kids get through stress, disappointment, and setbacks without shutting down. If you want a clearer, doable approach to parenting for teen mental health, listen now, then subscribe, share with another parent, and leave a review. What’s one skill you want to start practicing this week?

Episode Water Or Weed In Your Family? Cover

Water Or Weed In Your Family?

What are you growing in your family right now? In this episode, we use a simple but powerful idea—“water or weed”—to talk about how everyday parenting choices shape the culture of your home. Because just like a garden, what you give attention to grows
and what you ignore or allow can quietly take over. We dig into what this looks like in real life: *  Why kids repeat behaviors that get attention (even negative ones)  *  How we sometimes accidentally “water” the behaviors we don’t want  *  The power of noticing and reinforcing the good—on purpose  *  How to correct behavior without feeding it  *  And how small family routines can build stronger, more connected relationships  We also talk about how to reset when your family feels off—whether that’s more arguing, complaining, or just feeling disconnected—and how to start again from where you are right now. Because strong families don’t happen by accident.  They grow—one habit, one conversation, and one moment of attention at a time.

Episode Raise Quitproof Kids Cover

Raise Quitproof Kids

What do you do when your kid wants to quit
or worse, won’t even start? In this episode, we’re talking about how to raise a kid who doesn’t give up—and how to be a parent who doesn’t give up either. Because perseverance isn’t just about pushing through big challenges
it shows up in homework battles, missed goals, frustration, and all those everyday moments where quitting feels easier. We break down what research says about growth mindset, grit, and why effort matters more than talent—and then we make it real with stories from our own kids (including the moments we wanted to step in and just do it for them). You’ll walk away with simple, practical tools you can use right away: *  How to shift your child from “I can’t” to “I can’t yet”  *  Why struggle actually builds confidence (and protects against risky behaviors)  *  What to say instead of “you’re so smart”  *  How to help your kid set goals they’ll actually follow through on  *  Easy ways to build perseverance into your family culture  This one is about raising finishers—not perfect kids, but kids who keep going.

Episode The Transformative Power of Forgiveness in Families Cover

The Transformative Power of Forgiveness in Families

Can forgiveness transform your family's emotional health? On this episode of Good Friends, Strong Families, Angela and Anna unpack the remarkable power of forgiveness in nurturing healthier family dynamics. We examine how harboring resentment can elevate stress levels and undermine your well-being, while learning to forgive can offer emotional liberation and healing. Drawing insights from the Strengthening Families program, we provide actionable steps to cultivate forgiveness—not as a means of excusing harm, but as a way to free yourself from the chains of anger and pain. We also highlight the crucial role of teaching children to both seek and grant forgiveness, emphasizing its impact on their emotional development and the overall harmony of family life. Dive into the nuances of making a sincere apology and maintaining open lines of communication within your family. We break down the anatomy of a heartfelt apology, from acknowledging one's mistakes to offering meaningful amends, alongside emphasizing the importance of empathy and positive practices for children. Learn how to approach someone for an apology and navigate conflicts with grace, while understanding your own emotional triggers. As we conclude, we urge you to prioritize relationships over the need to be right and welcome your stories on teaching forgiveness in your own families. Tune in for a thoughtful conversation that underscores the transformative potential of forgiveness in enriching family bonds.

Put a mark each time you give a reinforcing compliment. Steps to a Reinforcing Compliment: To change behavior or encourage better behavior regularly, you should incorporate these five steps: 1. Give it immediately: Don’t delay; provide the compliment right after the positive action occurs. 2. Be excited and sincere: Your enthusiasm shows its importance, and sincerity ensures the message is received as genuine. 3. Say exactly what the person did well: Be specific about what action or behavior you're praising. 4. Tell how it helps the person: Connect the action to its positive impact, making it meaningful. 5.
