Episode A Poem for the Elevation of the Venerable and Life-Giving Cross (Recorded Sep 17, 2023) Cover

A Poem for the Elevation of the Venerable and Life-Giving Cross (Recorded Sep 17, 2023)

In this podcast episode, Fr. Deacon Maxime embarks on a poetic journey into the heart of spirituality and faith. The podcast delves into the symbolic significance of the Cross, portraying it as a life-giving, pure, and illuminating symbol that opens the door to Paradise and dispels the darkness of death. The Cross is celebrated as the source of hope, purpose, and meaning in a world where without it, life might seem futile and devoid of direction. Fr. Deacon Maxime explores the contrast between a world without the Cross, where self-fulfillment and personal desires reign, and the Orthodox Christian faith that calls for self-denial and following the path of Christ. The message emphasizes the importance of embracing the Cross as a means of finding communion with God and discovering one's deepest desires. The Cross is presented as a reminder of God's infinite grace and the means by which God bore our sins and won redemption for humanity. The poem concludes with a heartfelt call to rejoice in the Cross, recognizing God's presence in suffering, and finding strength and hope in the resurrection's glory. Opening hymn is chanted by Christian Farradj (used with permission)

Episode Slothfulness and the Last Judgement - Homily on Matthew 25:31-46 (Recorded Feb 19, 2023) Cover

Slothfulness and the Last Judgement - Homily on Matthew 25:31-46 (Recorded Feb 19, 2023)

In this homily, Fr. Deacon Maxime recounts a story told by Elder Cleopa of Romania about a monk who asked God to show him how the devil deceives people. In this vision, the devil instructs his demons on how to deceive people, with the most effective method being to postpone repentance and prayer by convincing people they have plenty of time to change. This leads people to become more deeply ingrained in sin. The church reminds us of our future judgment and encourages us to wake up and not be deceived by the devil's tactics. The homily highlights the sin of sloth, or spiritual laziness, which can lead to a disregard for spiritual practices and a rejection of the love of God. Lent is a time to remove our spiritual slothfulness and become awakened. Opening hymn is chanted by Christian Farradj (used with permission)

The Good Samaritan - Homily on Luke 10:25-37 (Recorded Nov 15, 2020)

The Parable of the Good Samaritan is a familiar story. While the surface-level meaning of the parable is to be a good neighbor and help someone in need, the Church Fathers saw this parable as an extended metaphor for the entire Gospel. When the Church Fathers looked at this parable of the Good Samaritan, they saw symbols of sin and grace, brokenness and healing. Many Church Fathers treat the parable of the Good Samaritan allegorically with a Christological interpretation, where they identify the Good Samaritan with Jesus, the oil and wine as the sacraments, and the inn as the church. This parable becomes a picture of the entire mystery of salvation. In his homily, Fr. Deacon Maxime discusses how God wants to cure us and give us eternal life, and how the church, its sacraments, and its priests help us in this journey.

Episode Queen of Heaven - Homily on the Dormition of our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary (Recorded August 16, 2020) Cover

Queen of Heaven - Homily on the Dormition of our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary (Recorded August 16, 2020)

The king's mother in ancient Israel had a royal title and held an official position second only to the king himself. She wore a crown and sat at the right hand of the king, and was a powerful intercessor with her son. The Virgin Mary is also called a queen in the hymns and prayers of the church, and is much more than just the woman who gave birth to Jesus. Mary is the queen of the Messiah's kingdom, and in her own song of praise in Luke's Gospel, she implies that she and her child have been exalted to sit upon royal thrones. In this homily, Fr. Deacon Maxime invites believers to implore the defense and assistance of the Queen of Heaven. Opening hymn is chanted by Christian Farradj (used with permission)
