"A good team needs to have lots of different strengths, and if you're judging your performance on someone else's strengths, you're going to fall short. ...I think sometimes you imagine you should have all the strengths - you can't."   "...'What got you here won't get you there'. I think I've found the transitions a little bit tricky sometimes where you're good at what you're doing, so then you move on to something else...you were probably top dog in the the role and the level you were at and then go to being the newbie every time you go into a new role - I found that tricky at times."

"Something I really really wish I had known earlier, was to gel properly and build friendships with the 10-20 people who are on the same trajectory as you in your market.  For me those friendships have been the most valuable investment I have made over my whole career." "Things always happen really quickly...but don't try and force the pace artificially  - normally it's a bit of a waste of energy."

"You don't get to Director or Partner by just doing a good job - you've really got to think about how you're going to grow your own business within a business." "To become a leader...I needed to develop myself as an individual...working out why I got on so well with some people and not as well with others, I realised it was as much about me as it was about other people...acting peer to peer came quickly, but understanding why, it took me a long time to get there." Insights from Leaders: Lucy's conversation with Clare Fielding, co-founder and Managing Partner of Town Legal LLP

Clare is a co-founder and Managing Partner of Town Legal LLP, the UK’s leading specialist planning law firm. As a lawyer, she is particularly known for her work on major projects in London, including Battersea Power Station and the Emirates Stadium.  In 2022, Clare also qualified as an executive coach and now also undertakes coaching pro bono, primarily (but not exclusively) in the planning and built environment sector.  She is closely involved in the leadership and management of Town and regularly speaks on diversity and inclusion in the workplace.
