Newyorkilaisen miljoonaperijän, Robert Durstin, vaimo katoaa jälkiä jättämättä tammikuussa 1982 ja vahvoista epäilyistä huolimatta tapaus jää selvittämättä vuosikymmenien ajaksi. Kun tutkinta lähes 20 vuotta myöhemmin avataan uudelleen, murhataan Durstin paras ystävä kylmäverisesti hänen kotonaan. Vyyhti lähtee selviämään vasta 2010-luvulla, kun Durstia dokumenttisarjaansa haastatelleen tuotantoryhmän nauhalle tallentuu vahingossa vessassa itsekseen mumisseen miehen yllättävä tunnustus.
