Welcome to the Layers of Design Podcast! I'm your host, Ebehi. Thank you for tuning in and if this is your first time, welcome! Before we get into this episode, we're 2 weeks away from our first annual event, on April 17th! DESIGN X COMMUNITY: Rethinking Public Spaces! If you haven't checked out this event or signed up yet, head over to our website, layersofdesign.online. Design X Community is going to be a series of events encouraging designers to think about and take action towards social issues in our communities. This first event is focused on bringing awareness to people experiencing homelessness. It's a 3 part event so there's something for everyone. Again, head over to layersofdesign.online of all the info. Also, we had an amazing conversation with Julia Nagele, principal and design director at HEWITT during our last Sketch It Out episode. So if you missed it, head over to our website or YouTube channel for the replay! Now, to this week's episode. Our guest is Ike Obanye, he's the principal of the award winning RIBA Chartered architectural practice - Iketecture. Ike is also a founding partner of the Project Africa Network, an organization devoted to the economic empowerment of the continent through strengthening the relationships, partnerships and collaborations between the continents diaspora and its local communities, businesses and people! Ike truly is an inspiration and openly shares with us how he got started in the profession. He gives a lot of great advice and tips on growing in your professional and personal life. Most of all, this conversation was a lot of fun and we had lots of laughs too! So stay tuned and enjoy! Beat by Doctunes aka OmzziSong Rambo by Henri-Paul

Episode 054 - Giving Back And Mentorship

Welcome to this weeks episode of the layers of design podcast. I'm your host Ebehi and as always, thank you for tuning in. If this is your first time, thank you and welcome! This episode is dear to my heart as I've grown to know our guest this week and she truly is phenomenal! Let me introduce you all to Kyrah L. Williams, a successful, multi-faceted young woman with many talents. Dedicated to helping her community and making a difference for others, her purpose is clear - service. Kyrah graduated from the University of Miami in 2016 with her Bachelor of Science degree in Architectural Engineering and in 2018 with her Master of Architecture degree. She has not only worked for several Architectural and Engineering firms, but she has actually started her own drafting firm. In addition, she runs her non-profit, A’naiys Charities, which is a 501C(3) tax-exempt organization in Miramar, Florida dedicated to cancer research, comforting the homeless, protecting abandoned animals, and increasing representation of Blacks and minorities in STEM and Architecture. Also, she runs America’s Hidden Gem™ - a platform dedicated to celebrating the Black Architect and ally professionals and also hosts the branch podcast – America’s Hidden Gem™ the podcast with a peer. Through mentorship and professional development summits, she aims to increase the percentage of Black architects from ~2%. She is currently working as a Project Manager for a Structural/Forensic Engineering firm in Miami, Florida. In this episode, she inspires us by sharing her journey in the field of architecture, engineering, how she got started with A'naiys Charities and Americas Hidden Gem and most of all, what it truly means to give back! Like I told her, this episode is so wholesome. Recording and editing it felt like having I was having a warm, homecooked Thanksgiving meal! Well, keep listening and you'll see what I mean. Enjoy! Our Design X Community: Rethinking Public Spaces event is less than two months away! Thank you to everyone that has supported us so far! This event is to bring awareness, provide solutions and give back to the homeless community! Its a 3 part event that includes a design competition, virtual design seminar and an outreach event! The design competition is due on April 4th, and the main events are on April 17th and 18th so you still have lots of time to be a part of it! Episode 053 - Another Side To Architecture!

This week, we have the pleasure of sharing a conversation with Marisa Cortright who is a Business Development Officer at UNStudio. Now, this episode is a bit different because Marisa is not a designer or an architect but, with degrees in architectural and urban history from the Bartlett School of Architecture and Barnard College, she is immersed in the world of architecture through business development. I enjoyed this conversation a lot because Marisa and I discuss a different side of architecture. I think it's important as designers and architects for us to be truly honest with the work we do and what our work and our profession as a whole represent. I first found Marisa through the article she wrote in 2019 - "Death to the Calling: A Job In Architecture Is Still A Job". It's really an eye opening piece where she talks about the overlooked side of the profession. We'll be diving into this article in the episode! In the meantime, enjoy, get inspired and let's get real. We have a conversation about how he got started in architecture, how his different experiences in his educational and professional career have shaped him as a designer and why it is important for designers and architects to learn to design equitable communities.
