[Video] Creativity with Lists of 30

What is this? I am testing the publishing of a NotebookLM Video Overview of my original article: This is completely AI written with slides and audio overlay with NotebookLM. I was pretty impressed, so I decided to share. In my 30 day challenge fashion, I will post the end-to-end process and show how I can automate it into just publishing off of my existing lists of 30 content. Transcript (00:00:00): Hey there, let’s talk about creative blocks. (00:00:02): You know that feeling, right? (00:00:04): When you’re just stuck, staring at a blank page, waiting for an idea to hit you? (00:00:08): Well, (00:00:08): today we are going to crack that code with a technique that is so simple, (00:00:12): but so powerful, (00:00:14): it might just change the way you think. (00:00:16): Ready? (00:00:17): Let’s get into it. (00:00:18): Yeah, this. (00:00:20): This is the look. (00:00:22): That blinking cursor, (00:00:23): the empty space, (00:00:24): it can feel like so much pressure to come up with something, (00:00:27): anything brilliant. (00:00:29): It’s a feeling we all know, (00:00:30): whether your thoughts are just stuck, (00:00:32): totally scattered, (00:00:33): or maybe they just decided not to show up today. (00:00:35): But what if we could flip that? (00:00:37): What if we could turn all that pressure into, well, play? (00:00:41): That’s what this is all about. (00:00:43): We’re gonna explore a framework that turns that scary blank page into a creative playground. (00:00:48): And it’s all built around one simple, powerful rule. (00:00:51): Make a list of 30. (00:00:54): So what is this 30 list challenge? (00:00:57): Well, it comes from a writer named Clemens Wan. (00:01:00): And honestly, it’s this fantastic exercise in structured creativity. (00:01:04): Let’s break down what it is and more importantly, why it works so well. (00:01:09): Okay, so a list of 30 is pretty much what it sounds like. (00:01:12): You pick a topic, any topic, and you just generate 30 items about it. (00:01:16): But here’s the real key. (00:01:18): The goal is not to have this perfect, polished final document. (00:01:22): Nope. (00:01:23): The real value is in what it calls the mental gymnastics. (00:01:26): The process itself forces you to get past your own inner critic and dig deeper than (00:01:31): just what you can remember off the top of your head. (00:01:33): And this quote right here, it just nails the whole philosophy. (00:01:37): It’s not about the end result. (00:01:39): It’s about the journey your brain takes to get there. (00:01:42): It’s the effort, the weird connections your mind starts to make when you push it a little. (00:01:46): That’s where the good stuff is. (00:01:48): It’s all about discovery, not performance. (00:01:51): All right, (00:01:51): so you’re probably thinking, (00:01:53): okay, (00:01:53): this sounds cool, (00:01:54): I wanna try it, (00:01:55): but where do I even start? (00:01:56): The beautiful thing about this whole method is how simple it is. (00:01:59): So let’s just walk through the first few steps to get those ideas flowing. (00:02:03): No friction at all. (00:02:05): First things first, get rid of any barriers. (00:02:07): Use whatever you like to write with, a pen, your laptop, a giant whiteboard, it doesn’t matter. (00:02:12): Find a place where you’re comfortable, where your mind can just wander. (00:02:15): And then, and this is super important, just trust your gut. (00:02:19): Start writing. (00:02:20): For your very first list, pick something you know inside and out. (00:02:23): Favorite movies, things you love about your hometown. (00:02:26): Make it easy on yourself to just begin. (00:02:29): Now, this is where it gets really interesting, the rules. (00:02:32): These aren’t meant to box you in, they’re actually designed to set you free. (00:02:35): Finishing within a day, that builds momentum. (00:02:38): Not looking stuff up, that forces you to look inward, so the list is genuinely yours. (00:02:42): And if you get stuck, (00:02:43): the good old who, (00:02:44): what, (00:02:44): where, (00:02:45): when, (00:02:45): why, (00:02:45): and how questions are your best friend for finding new angles. (00:02:49): And, you know, as Clemens 1 puts it, getting to 10 should be easy, right? (00:02:56): This just perfectly captures the vibe of the whole thing. (00:02:58): That first third of the list is really just the warm-up. (00:03:01): You’re just getting all the obvious easy stuff out of your head and onto the page. (00:03:05): Don’t think too hard. (00:03:06): Just go. (00:03:07): Okay, so let’s keep going. (00:03:09): Because after that first easy burst of ideas, almost everybody hits a wall. (00:03:14): You’ll get to number 15, maybe 20, and just stop. (00:03:19): But that slump isn’t a sign you’re failing. (00:03:22): It’s actually a sign that the real creative magic is just about to start. (00:03:25): So here’s how you get through it. (00:03:26): So you’ve got two basic scenarios here. (00:03:29): If you’re just kind of slowing down, take a look at what you already have. (00:03:33): Can you expand on one of those ideas? (00:03:35): Do you see any patterns forming? (00:03:37): But if you are truly epically stuck, you got to jolt your brain. (00:03:42): Ask the question in a totally new way. (00:03:44): Step away from it for a couple of hours. (00:03:46): Or, and this is my personal favorite, just start making ridiculous jokes about the topic. (00:03:51): Seriously, laughter is an amazing way to break out of rigid thinking. (00:03:56): So you’ve pushed through that middle part. (00:03:58): You’re on the home stretch. (00:03:59): What’s the mindset you need to actually get across the finish line? (00:04:02): Well, these are the golden rules. (00:04:04): This is the philosophy that makes the whole thing click. (00:04:07): This might be the most important thing to remember. (00:04:10): Those last five items are always the hardest, (00:04:13): but they are also where the real breakthroughs live. (00:04:16): You’ve used up all the obvious answers, (00:04:18): so your brain is forced to make these new wild connections. (00:04:21): Whatever you do, don’t quit at number 27. (00:04:24): I promise your most interesting idea is right around the corner. (00:04:28): Oh, this rule is so freeing. (00:04:31): You have to let go of perfection. (00:04:32): The mantra here is written, not perfect. (00:04:35): This isn’t for a grade. (00:04:36): It’s for you. (00:04:37): It’s an exploration. (00:04:39): So give yourself permission for it to be messy and weird and wonderfully human. (00:04:43): It’s always about authenticity over polish. (00:04:46): And seriously, above all else, this is supposed to be enjoyable. (00:04:51): It’s a creative act of kindness to yourself. (00:04:55): Think of it like you’re just having a conversation with your own brain. (00:04:58): You get to be curious and playful and surprised by what you find in there. (00:05:03): It’s not a chore. (00:05:04): It’s a treat. (00:05:05): And here is this awesome little tradition from the source material that I just love. (00:05:09): Make your final item, number 30, special. (00:05:12): It can be an inside joke only you get, (00:05:14): a surprising twist, (00:05:16): or just a really heartfelt summary of your thoughts. (00:05:18): It’s like your personal signature on the list, a little reward for finishing the journey. (00:05:23): Okay, so you’ve got the what, you’ve got the why, and you’ve got the how. (00:05:27): You get the philosophy behind it. (00:05:29): There’s really only one thing left to do, right? (00:05:32): It’s time to go from just watching this to actually doing it. (00:05:35): Time to become a writer. (00:05:37): So I’m asking you directly, what’s your first list going to be about? (00:05:40): It can be something fun, (00:05:41): like 30 movies I love, (00:05:43): or something a bit more reflective, (00:05:44): like 30 Lessons from Corp That Life. (00:05:46): Honestly, the topic doesn’t matter nearly as much as the act of just starting. (00:05:50): So what’s the first thing that pops into your head? (00:05:53): Go with that one. (00:05:55): And that’s it. (00:05:56): A simple, powerful secret to unlocking a potentially endless stream of ideas. (00:06:01): If you want some inspiration, (00:06:03): you can check out over 260 example lists and read a lot more from Clemens Juan over (00:06:07): at listsof30.com.
