But hidden beneath the celebration are fascinating moments that many Americans have never heard. In this special Independence Day edition of Moments Almanac, we uncover ten little-known facts about July 4, 1776—from the surprising day America actually voted for independence to the real story behind the Liberty Bell, the risks taken by the signers, and the remarkable coincidence that brought two Founding Fathers to the end of their lives on the nation's fiftieth birthday. More than a history lesson, this episode reflects on the courage, sacrifice, and commitment that shaped a nation—and points to a greater freedom found in Jesus Christ. As we give thanks for the blessings of liberty, we're reminded that our ultimate citizenship is in a kingdom that cannot be shaken. Share Your Thoughts [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2602723/fan_mail/new] On July 3, history remembers one of the Civil War's most devastating assaults—and a little-known church council that forever shaped how Christians understand grace. At Gettysburg, thousands of soldiers marched across an open field toward a stone wall they could not take. More than thirteen centuries earlier, bishops gathered in Orange, France, to answer a different question: Can we make our own way to God, or does God make the first move toward us? In this episode of Moments Almanac, those two stories converge into a powerful reminder that salvation has never been about climbing high enough, trying hard enough, or earning God's acceptance. The gospel tells a better story: before we ever crossed the field, Christ crossed it for us. Join us as we explore the tragedy of Pickett's Charge, the enduring legacy of the Synod of Orange, the timeless words of Ephesians 2, and the beloved hymn Rock of Ages. It's a moving reflection on grace that meets us where we fall—and the hope that we never walk the field alone. Take heart. Notice the scattered moments. And remember: grace always moves first.

July 2, 2026 | Moments Almanac | Lightning

Share Your Thoughts [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2602723/fan_mail/new] On this episode of Moments Almanac, we explore two lives forever connected by one remarkable truth: God's grace was never meant to require a translator. On July 2, a young Martin Luther was thrown to the ground by a terrifying thunderstorm that changed the course of his life. Sixteen years earlier, Thomas Cranmer was born in England, destined to become the quiet architect of worship in the English language. Though their journeys were vastly different, both men helped tear down barriers that kept ordinary people from hearing—and understanding—the good news of Jesus Christ. Discover the story behind Luther's search for peace, Cranmer's gift of English worship, and why their legacy still matters for every believer today. Scripture: 1 Corinthians 14:9 (ESV) "If with your tongue you utter speech that is not intelligible, how will anyone know what is said?" Take heart. Notice the scattered moments. Share the grace.

Share Your Thoughts [https://www.buzzsprout.com/2602723/fan_mail/new] What can a hotel Bible and a cell possibly have in common? On this episode of Scattered Moments, we visit two remarkable events that happened on July 1. In 1899, two traveling businessmen founded the Gideons with a simple vision: place God's Word where weary travelers could find it. Thirty-eight years later, on that same date, German pastor Martin Niemöller was arrested by the Gestapo for refusing to let the state rule the conscience of the church. But this isn't just a story about courage. It's a story about the patient work of Scripture. Niemöller wasn't transformed overnight. The same Word quietly waiting in a hotel nightstand slowly broke through the hard places in his own heart over decades. Jeremiah calls God's Word "a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces"—not with one blow, but through faithful, relentless grace. Sometimes God changes the world one Bible at a time. Sometimes He changes one heart at a time. Either way, His Word never returns empty.
