Episode Episode 4: Revolutionaries- Che Guevara Cover

Episode 4: Revolutionaries- Che Guevara

Welcome to Sightlines. A podcast where we try to understand today and reimagine tomorrow. My name is Anthony Sosa, my co-host is Brandon Bond.  In this episode Brandon and I read 4 different works by Che Guevara- two are written works and two are speeches he gave in the 1960’s. Che Guevara is a revolutionary. He participated in, and at times led, the Cuban Revolution from 1953-1959, culminating in the removal of the US backed Batista regime and the establishment of Cuba as the first communist country in Latin America. The documents we discuss are titled “Notes for the Study of the Cuban Revolution,” published in Verde Olivo in 1960, “Economics Cannot be Separated from Politics,” a speech he gives to the world at the Organization for the American States (OAS) in 1961, about a year before the Cuban Missile Crisis, “On Revolutionary Medicine,” a speech he gives to fellow medical workers in 1960 and “ Socialism and Man in Cuba,” written in 1965.  We talk a bit about the history of the revolution, about Che as a person and writer, and about his ideas and how those ideas matter for today and for the future. Themes we discuss when reading:  1. Revolutionary Ideology on an underlying social level and rhetorical level.  2. Communicating that ideology not just to a nation but to the world.  3. Che’s concept of a “new man” under socialism and our take on his analysis.  Che Guevara Internet Archive https://www.marxists.org/archive/guevara/works.htm [https://www.marxists.org/archive/guevara/works.htm]  Notes for the Study of the Ideology of the Cuban Revolution https://www.marxists.org/archive/guevara/1960/10/08.htm [https://www.marxists.org/archive/guevara/1960/10/08.htm]  Economics Cannot be Separated from Politics https://www.marxists.org/archive/guevara/1961/08/08.htm [https://www.marxists.org/archive/guevara/1961/08/08.htm]  On Revolutionary Medicine: https://www.marxists.org/archive/guevara/1960/08/19.htm [https://www.marxists.org/archive/guevara/1960/08/19.htm]  Socialism and man in Cuba https://www.marxists.org/archive/guevara/1965/03/man-socialism.htm [https://www.marxists.org/archive/guevara/1965/03/man-socialism.htm]  If you have any topic recommendations, questions, or feedback to us consider you can subscribe to our Substack and interact with us there. Episode 0: Sightlines a Podcast

Hi welcome to Sightlines, I’m Anthony Sosa in Portales, NM, and I’m Brandon Bond in Houston, TX, and we’re here to talk about the past and the future, to better understand our present. I’m interested in humanity, human potential, human experiences and human narratives. I think we’re amazing creatures who make amazing things with our minds and with our hands. Stories. Art. I think art is meaningful and important to us as humans. I also think we, as gods, have created institutions and systems- things greater than ourselves– that now run our lives and use us as the means to their ends. I like philosophy and big ideas. And I’m interested in: bursting bubbles, shifting mindsets, social upheaval, and grounding perspectives. I have taught social studies for 8 years to teens and adults and I’ve taught AP Human Geography, US History, Economics, and Government. I have a bachelors in History, with a focus on The Cold War, and a Masters in Education from the University of Texas at Arlington. And I have spent 30 years in entertainment and the performing arts, as well as over a decade in the banking industry. I have a Bachelors in Criminal Justice and certifications in Mediation and Dispute Resolution, and I am currently pursuing a Masters in Strategic Foresight.  And we both played in The Raven Charter, a prog rock band from Denton, TX from 2005 to 2017. Join us on a journey of exploration. Hoping to learn from what was, what is and what may never be. Salamé
