1LT Charles Samuel Huppmann, US AAC, KIA Jan. 23, 1944

Like many young Americans of his generation, Charles Samuel Huppmann's future changed dramatically as war spread across the globe. When he registered for the draft in 1941, he was living in Baltimore and working for the Shipbuilding Division of Bethlehem Steel. But with the nation moving closer to war, Charles chose a different path. On October 31st, 1941 — just weeks before Pearl Harbor — he enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces. He volunteered for Air Cadet training and was sent through a rigorous series of programs in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arizona. In September 1942, after completing fifteen weeks of navigation training at the Army Air Forces Navigation School in Hondo, Texas, Charles earned his commission as a second lieutenant and became a navigator aboard heavy bombers. Episode 1LT Charles Robinson Bowman, JR., KIA March 29, 1944 Cover

1LT Charles Robinson Bowman, JR., KIA March 29, 1944

The story of First Lieutenant Charles Robinson Bowman, Jr. comes to an end far from the dairy farm he built in Maryland, and far from the halls of Princeton where his future once seemed so certain. He was part of a generation that left ordinary lives behind — farmers, students, sons, brothers — and crossed an ocean into a world at war. From the hills of North Africa to the mountains of Italy, Charles and the men of the 34th Infantry Division endured some of the hardest fighting of the Second World War. At Anzio, on March 29th, 1944, Charles gave his life in that struggle. He was only twenty-eight years old. Welcome to Stars of Sacrifice: WWII, the official podcast of Stories Behind the Stars. 1LT Charles Lamkin Bowman, US Army Air Corp., KIA Aug. 14, 1945

the story of First Lieutenant Charles Lamkin Burman is one of extraordinary courage, sacrifice, and service across two theaters of war. From escorting bombers over Europe to flying dangerous low-level missions over Japan in the final days of World War II, he served with distinction until the very end.
