Ep. 125 - The Great American Land Grab - Solar Farms, Data Centers, Carbon Pipelines, and Geoengineering

We've talked about Agenda 2030 quite a bit. This week, we consider that the deadline is fast approaching and the countless changes we have already seen because of it. By 2030, the big story may not just be energy or technology itself, but the scale of land conversion behind it. Across solar farms, data centers, forest management, critical minerals, carbon pipelines, and weather modification, millions of acres are being targeted, reshaped, or put under new forms of control. Solar alone already covers hundreds of thousands of acres nationally, with some estimates putting farmland converted for solar at roughly 550,000 to 600,000 acres, and projections going much higher as buildout expands. Data centers are spreading even faster in development terms: more than 1,500 are planned nationwide, many in rural regions, and average site sizes are around 224 acres, with some hyperscale projects reaching far beyond that. What ties all of this together is the way land is being repurposed for large systems that are described as necessary for clean energy, digital growth, climate resilience, or national security. But on the ground, that often means farmland, forests, and open space are being absorbed into industrial infrastructure, while local communities worry about eminent domain, water use, habitat loss, public health, and loss of control. In that sense, the central question for 2030 is not just whether the projects succeed, but how much land they collectively consume and who ends up bearing the cost of that transformation.
