Episode The viking effect; the Rock falls and a language fades. Cover

The viking effect; the Rock falls and a language fades.

What do we know about the end of the Ald Clut kingdom? Who ruled over Loch Lomondside when it fell? This episode summarises the known evidence and puts forward a suggestion for what happened afterwards. We'll also look at the Northern Brittonic language and how comprehensively it died out. Do any traces of it linger on still in the area? This is the last episode in this series of seven, taking the history of East Loch Lomondside up to the end of the Brittonic period and onto the threshold of a new cultural phase when Gaeldom and the Gaelic language swept into and across the landscape. There will hopefully be a second podcast series delving into that more recent past, from the 12th century onwards, starting in a few months time. Episode In search of the Beacon of Ben Lomond Cover

In search of the Beacon of Ben Lomond

Was there really a beacon on Ben Lomond? If so, who lit it, when and why? There's no hard evidence such as archaeology or documented sources we can look at to help answer those questions, so this episode explores other angles and wider beacon history to come up with some suggestions, and a conclusion that perhaps links back to some history of the east side of the loch. I've also got an email address you can get in touch on, it's eastlochlomondhistory1@gmail.com, and it would be great to get feedback, critical comment, and any thoughts or potential additions to the known history and suggestions being put forward in this podcast. Episode Britons, Romans and how Loch Lomond got its name Cover

Britons, Romans and how Loch Lomond got its name

This episode is a bit of a long one with a fair bit packed in. It delves further into the iron age identity of the people of the Loch Lomond area and explores their potential relationships with neighbouring tribes and the invading Romans. We'll also investigate the original name of Loch Lomond, how it may link with an ancient name for the Firth of Clyde, and how it may be nothing to do with the meaning behind the name that you will find related in most places online. I've also got an email address you can get in touch on, it's eastlochlomondhistory1@gmail.com, and it would be great to get feedback, critical comment, and any thoughts or potential additions to the known history and suggestions being put forward in this podcast. Episode Crannog culture and tribal identity Cover

Crannog culture and tribal identity

This episode will look into how common crannogs were on Loch Lomond and potential links with later settlements around the Loch. We'll also explore where the main centre or centres of power and influence may have been, and start to get a handle on the identity of the folks who lived around the loch at this time.
